He’s a boy who will never love you. The reminder of his bachelor status always surprises you when you go to pee and the toilet seat’s up. There’s a television show playing, you’re mostly watching it, chatting inanely during commercial breaks. You take a sip from your beer that’s gone warm, wincing but staying silent, and by extension, cool. The tension between the two of you is humming, and you wonder, not for the first time, if this is some drama you’ve created to keep yourself sated in the midst a romantic dry spell. You can’t decide. That’s not true, you can. The tension is there, but it’s only a thin sheen that covers your fear.
You look over at him as he’s glancing over at you. Your gazes bump and something passes. Your heart quickens and with effort you force your gaze away. In retrospect, you’re still not sure what you read in his gaze, what he read in yours. It wasn’t love. It wasn’t lust. Fiction would call it longing; reality, regret.
Your heart, numbed by piss warm beer, mutters out its wish for a kind of mentor who gets it who will help you make sense of the ache and break that follows you in every relationship. For all those who wear their heart on their sleeve, while also managing to keep the depth of their pain secreted away I’m your person. Schedule your free consult today.
