Hello there! I'm a warm, engaging elder therapist who goes the extra mile: I get involved, I make myself available, I share my thinking, and I don't clock-watch. After over 40 years in practice - and the telling experiences of an eventful life - I'm likely to be familiar with your predicament. It's reassuring to be treated by an independent-minded therapist who has personally encountered both sides of the professional fence. My acquaintance with trauma attests to the real possibility of overcoming adversity. Finding a resourceful ally makes you feel safe. And practical problem solving is key.

I have worked with clients from a variety of backgrounds, some that have sought pre-marital guidance regarding their communication skills or to address doubts about management of the relationships with the future in-laws.
I offer relationship and family therapy. The reasons that the clients have come to me is to try and repair their relationships, either due to unresolved issues, the total breakdown in communication. Sometimes, after years of being together have forgotten how to voice their needs, and have given up trying to have them satisfied. Other times families seek help trying to navigate life with teenagers. I have also worked with individuals who are seeking some direction, purpose and meaning in their lives. People come for therapy as they are aware that they could be living a more optimal life, are exploring and evaluating their lives.

Many people are misled by a meaningless consumerist culture, digital rumination, selfish friends or family, and overly de manding studies or employment.
Therapy has become very clinical in the pathological world we live in. I focus on ways to make ethical, value-based choices that help you build a purposeful, meaningful life. I use an Existentialist approach (Hu manistic) while and my methods generally follow Acceptance & Commitment Therapy guidelines. I have a unique perspective on many issues from my experience in life from personal challenges: raised in poverty, suffering male-anorexia, failed early-life relationships and 20 yrs. as an entrepreneur. This lived experience helps me be an effective counsellor, mental health speaker and provide ethical services as a life-coach.

Life’s journey is often filled with twists and turns, and it’s natural to feel lost or overwhelmed at times. With years of experience in the field of psychology, I understand that each individual’s journey is unique. My approach combines evidence-based practices with a deep sense of empathy, allowing me to tailor our sessions to your specific needs.

I consult with individuals or couples over the age of 18 years. Most of the time the individuals seek insight and solutions to personal, professional or life challenges. These challenges may include anxiety or depression that is associated to internal or interpersonal conflict. Notably, individuals seek empathy and compassion with a therapist who tends to be more interactive and collaborative.

I believe each of us has the capacity to be happy and fulfilled, both in our individual roles and as part of relationships, and especially the relationship with our primary life partners. However sometimes complications happen and we loose track. But we all have a smart inner wisdom which can be trusted to put the parts together again, sometimes with help.

I believe that therapy is a partnership in being curious about your past, and exploring in an accepting and authentic environment. It is also about experiencing some of the difficult things in yourself and the world, and having a consistent, safe space to encounter these challenges. Sometimes when we hit our lowest point, we are most open to change.

I've studied the science, philosophy, and history of therapy at the University of Cape Town and University College London for seven years, and I have practiced as a counsellor in Cape Town for four years. I believe the mainspring of therapy is love. Everyone who has given or received therapy has gone through a kind of love disorder, and each has a story to tell: a love lost or denied, twisted or betrayed, perverted and shackled to violence.

I offer counselling and therapeutic life coaching. Clients will come to me with a range of problems and often feel some confusion. In our work we will clarify the problem and see what is most challenging for you at the present time. We will discover where this confusion arises in the body and mind and be able to see what started it. Perhaps this has been triggered in the past: by an environment, people, a person, upbringing etc. The work we do is non-judgemental and my purpose is to help you find your way out of the confusion and suffering, so you can find success, purpose and meaning in your life. I will be with you all the way

With psychotherapy managing difficult, excessive or painful behaviours allow for a sense of mastery and confidence to develop within you.
I have a psychotherapy practice that offers clients specialized psychotherapeutic care. My practice is for adults who need help with problems like mood disorders, substance use disorders and even aspects of their own personality they may find difficult to change. I like to collaborate with clients, to think together with them about what they may need to reflect on that will bring them value and meaning in their day-to-day life. In addition to this I think it is important to examine patterns of excessive or unhelpful behaviour that compromise their feeling of self-coherence, agency and place in the world.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
