Agatha All Along Creator Reveals Reason Behind Multiple Title Changes

Agatha All Along, the MCU series that premiered on Disney Plus on Wednesday, September 18, underwent several title changes in the course of its production. It was originally announced with the title Agatha: House of Harkness back in late 2021. That was changed to Agatha: Coven of Chaos in mid-2022 and changed again to Agatha: Darkhold Diaries in late 2023. At one point, there were talks that the series would simply be called Agatha. In May 2024, Marvel Studios put out the logo for the series with the title Agatha: The Lying Witch with Great Wardrobe in a since-deleted post on X (formerly Twitter), before announcing the current title. And now, series creator and showrunner Jac Schaeffer has revealed the real reason behind the multiple title changes.

Jac Schaeffer explains why Agatha All Along had multiple title changes

Schaeffer, who was also the creator and showrunner of WandaVision, explained in a recent interview it was a conscious decision on their part to change the title multiple times. She elaborated that they didn’t do it to “mess” with fans but believed that the Marvel enthusiasts would have “fun” solving the mystery.

“I don’t ever come from a place of like, ‘I want to mess with people,'” Schaeffer told CBR. “I want this to be fun. Let’s make this fun. And people love a mystery, and they love to decode. I do, too. So, I weave complex things, because I am so lucky that Marvel has this fan base who are up for the puzzle. It’s like, ecstatic. I really don’t know how to convey how great it is,” she added.

Schaeffer disclosed that they made the decision about the multiple title changes early in the writers’ room. “With the title, specifically, with the meta piece in WandaVision, very early in the [writers’] room, we were like, ‘What would Agatha be up to? What would the shenanigans be,’ she recalled. “We had all kinds of ideas, and we had questions of, ‘Can we take over the Disney+ platform? Can we mess with the tiles?’ Through witchcraft, she would do those things. It’s her being witchy,” Schaeffer revealed.

Schaeffer said it was delightful for the writers to try out multiple titles. It was also “deliberate” on their part that these titles became increasingly ridiculous. “So the titles also just delighted us, because we came up with so many, and they were all so absurd,” she stated.

“We were very deliberate, because if you look at the order of them, they get increasingly absurd. So it was the design that the early ones would seem real. For me, Coven of Chaos is where it starts to tip, because it does sound like a real show, but it sounds like a really bad show… So, yeah, it’s just Agatha up to her tricks,” Schaeffer added.

Agatha All Along debuted with two episodes on September 18, with additional episodes set to be released weekly.
