The Frozen Ground – review

This article is more than 11 years old
Nicolas Cage, Vanessa Hudgens and John Cusack give solid performances in this Prime Suspect-like thriller

You know you're getting older when the policemen start looking younger, you have no idea what's at No 1 and John Cusack starts playing serial killers. To follow up his sweaty-sicko turn in The Paperboy, Cusack portrays Robert Hansen, a mousy-looking family man in Alaska in 1983 who has a secret career in mass murder. On his trail is Sgt Jack Halcombe, played by Nicolas Cage with reasonable restraint and no sudden shouting, and Vanessa Hudgens is one of Hansen's targets who escaped and now faces the ordeal of testifying. There is some good Prime Suspect-like tension here, with a neat cat-and-mouse psychological gamble with a certain piece of jewellery – and solid performances from Hudgens, Cage and Cusack.
