Vijayapura is one of the 28 Lok Sabha constituencies in Karnataka,India. It comprises eight legislative assembly segments. The constituency falls in the lowest rainfall-receiving regions of Karnataka and faces persistent issues with repsect to irrigation and drought. The constituency is an architectural treausre trove and has 50 mosques, more than 20 tombs and a number of palaces, with both Hindu and Islamic influences. Among the famous sites in the area are Gol-Gumbaz, Jumma Masjid, Bara Kamaan, Gajanan Temple, Ibrahim Roza, Shivagiri, Siddeshwar Temple etc. In this election, Ramesh Jigajinagi, who belongs to SC (Left) is seeking his seventh re-election. He is pitted against two-time MLA Hanumant (Raju) Alagur, a former professor of humanities, who is SC (right).
