Arunachal Pradesh CM swearing-in updates: Highlights on June 13, 2024

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu asserted that his government’s focus would be to fulfil the promises made in the BJP’s election manifesto.

After taking oath as the Chief Minister for a third consecutive term, Mr. Khandu said the BJP returned to power in the State due to the development works undertaken by the Centre in the Northeast.

“We are committed to fulfilling all the promises. We will run the government in the next five years based on the electoral promises for the welfare and development of the people,” he said.

The first Cabinet meeting would chalk out a developmental roadmap for the first 100 days of the government, he added.

The verdicts to the Assembly elections in India’s easternmost and smallest State by population, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, respectively, might not be a harbinger of what is to come in the 2024 general election. But the decisive victories achieved by the incumbent parties, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Arunachal Pradesh and the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) in Sikkim, indicate that the electorates in two States, overwhelmingly, preferred continuity over change. Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and his party received a strong mandate, winning 46 out of the 60 seats and increasing the BJP’s tally even further by five seats.

The National People’s Party (NPP), led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, which is an ally of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), extended support to the Pema Khandu government

Dasanglu Pul, widow of former CM Kalikho Pul, is the lone woman in the ministry.

Others in the Pema Khandu’s council of ministers in Arunachal Pradesh are Biyuram Waghe, the State BJP president, Nyato Dukam, Dasanglu Pul, Gabriel D Wangsu, Wangki Lowang, Pasang D Sona, who was Assembly Speaker during the last term, Mama Natung, Balo Raja, Ojing Tasing, and Kento Jini.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had thanked the people of Arunachal Pradesh for reposing their faith in the BJP yet again and said the party will keep working with even greater vigour for the State’s growth.

“Thank you Arunachal Pradesh! The people of this wonderful State have given an unequivocal mandate to politics of development. My gratitude to them for reposing their faith in @BJP4Arunachal yet again,” Mr. Modi had said in a post on X.

Chowna Mein, who was in the same post during the last BJP term, took oath as the Deputy Chief Minister.

Pema Khandu sworn in as Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh for the third time in a row. Mr. Khandu led BJP to a comprehensive win in the April 19 Assembly polls.

Barring the 2019 elections, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has won the “family constituency” uncontested thrice, the first time for the BJP ahead of the State’s Mandate 2024. In doing so, the 44-year-old established himself as the power centre in India’s easternmost State.

“The BJP’s victory march in the country has begun from India’s Land of the Rising Sun,” he said after the BJP won 46 of the 60 seats, five more than in 2019. He credited the victory to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and the pro-development pitch of his party.

Ahead of the event, Assam Minister Ashok Singhal said there is great enthusiasm among the people as the BJP is forming the government once again in the state.

“People are very excited. There is enthusiasm among everyone in the state. Once again, the BJP is forming a government in Arunachal under the leadership of Pema Khandu. He will take oath at 11 a.m. today. The Chief Ministers of Assam, Tripura, and Sikkim will be there. Our responsibility is increasing because people are trusting us more,” Mr. Singhal said.

Preparations are underway for the swearing-in ceremony to be held at the DK State Convention Centre in Itanagar at around 11.00 a.m. Tight security arrangements have been made for the event, which will be attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Ministers JP Nadda and Kiren Rijiju, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and others.
