Delhi Lok Sabha election results highlights: BJP secures sizeable leads in all seven constituencies

The BJP won all 7 seats in Delhi in the 2014 and 2019 elections

Delhi General Election 2024 was held in the sixth phase, on May 25 to elect 7 members of the 18th Lok Sabha. Voter turnout in Delhi is 57.67% with 1,47,18,119 electors. Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP)- led National Democratic Alliance(NDA) contested against the Indian National Congress(INC) led INDIA alliances, comprising Aam Aadmi Party(AAP) and Indian National Congress(INC).

AAP has entered into a pre-poll alliance with Congress, with the AAP contesting four seats(New Delhi, East Delhi, South Delhi, and West Delhi) and the Congress three(North West Delhi, North East Delhi, and Chandni Chowk). BJP is contesting alone in all 7 seats. Because of the AAP-Congress alliance, Aravinder Singh Lovely joined BJP, which he had left in 2018 to join Congress. BJP secured all seven seats in both 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha Polls.

Even in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, BJP held a majority, and still in the 2020 Assembly election the same voters supported AAP. In the North East Delhi constituency, incumbent MP Manoj Tiwari(BJP) is contesting against political activist Kanhaiya Kumar(INC), and AAP fielded MLA Somnath Bharti against Bansuri Swaraj(BJP) in the New Delhi constituency.

The political landscape has been made more interesting by the Supreme Court’s interim bail grant to Arvind Kejriwal, amidst the Delhi liquor policy case. 

AAP has been struggling with the arrest of Key leaders like Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Sanjay Singh, raising questions about the political motivations behind these arrests.

    BJP secures sizeable leads in Northeast, Northwest and West Delhi

    BJP candidate from Northeast Delhi Manoj Tiwari, Northwest Delhi Yogender Chandoliya and West Delhi Kamaljeet Sehrawat all have secured leads of more than 1 lakh. Mr Tiwari leads by more than 1.48 lakh, Mr Chandoliya 1.77 lakh and Mr Sehrawat about 1.29 lakh.

    Manoj Tiwari’s margin of lead seeps past 1 lakh mark

    Candidate from North-east Delhi Manoj Tiwari is leading his nearest rival former JNU President and INDIA alliance candidate Kanhaiya Kumar by a margin of about 1.09 lakh. Mr Tiwari presently accounts for 4.4 lakh votes in comparison to Kanhaiya Kumar’s 3.39 lakh.

    Bansuri Swaraj expands lead by over 21,000 votes

    Ms Swaraj has presently been able to acquire more than 1.30 lakh votes. Her nearest rival Somnath Bharti has secured about 1.09 lakh votes at the time of writing.

    BJP’s Manoj Tiwari expands his margin of lead to 43,649 in North-East Delhi

    Mr Tiwari, who is looking for a continued stay at the House of the People in Delhi, has bagged more than 2.22 lakh votes - much above nearest rival from the INDIA alliance Kanhaiya Kumar who has garnered about 1.79 lakh votes.

    BJP’s Northwest Delhi candidate Yogendra Chandoliya expands margin of lead to over 76,000

    Mr Chandoliya is presently leading the constituency having garnered about 1.82 lakh votes, much higher than INDIA alliance candidate Udit Raj who has baggged a few more than 1.09 lakh votes.

    BJP candidate from New Delhi and daughter of late External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Bansuri Swaraj is leading in New Delhi by a margin of over 12,000 votes. Second to her is Somnath Bharti of AAP.

    BJP continues to expand lead in North-west, North-east Delhi and West Delhi

    Popular face of the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) Manoj Tiwari is leading in North-east Delhi by a margin of 31,547 votes, Yogender Chandoliya is leading by 42,922 votes in North-west Delhi and Kamaljeet Sehrawat by 28,007 votes. At the time of writing, BJP had retained leads in all the 7 seats amidst a very volatile day of counting.

    Congress reverses lead in Chandini Chowk

    As counting continues to progress, INDIA alliance candidate Jai Prakash Agarwal secured a slender lead of 4,293 votes in the Chandini Chowk constituency. Former Union Minister for Health Dr Harsh Vardhan represented the constituency in the now erstwhile Lok Sabha.

    In a rather reversal of early trends, BJP is ahead in all seven seats as it looks for a third clean sweep in the state. With the exception of North-west Delhi and West Delhi, the leads are in the range of 1,500-2,500 in early hours of counting.
