Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 updates: Highlights on June 4, 2024

The ruling Congress and BJP shared the honours in Telangana in the Lok Sabha election results as they bagged eight seats each out of the total 17, leaving the K. Chandrasekhar Rao-led BRS decimated.

AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi retained the Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat, defeating his nearest rival K. Madhavi Latha of BJP by a margin of over 3.38 lakh votes.

The BJP candidates emerged victorious in Adilabad (ST), Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Medak, Secunderabad, Malkajgiri, Chevella and Mahabubnagar LS seats.

The Congress nominees won from Peddapalle (SC), Mahabubabad (ST), Warangal (SC), Bhongir, Khammam, Nalgonda, Nagarkurnool (SC) and Zaheerabad.

The INDIA alliance made a major comeback in several politically crucial Hindi heartland States with its constituent Samajwadi Party registering a significant resurgence in Uttar Pradesh and the bloc making steady headway in Rajasthan, Bihar, Haryana and Jharkhand.

However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP-led alliance is set to retain power for a third consecutive term but not with an overwhelming majority as predicted by various exit polls.

According to results and trends, the National Democratic Alliance is set to get 291 Lok Sabha seats while the INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) is expected to have a tally of 234.

Preparing to take office for a record third consecutive term, Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged to work with all States, regardless of the party in power, to build a developed India.

In his first speech after the results of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Mr. Modi laid out his vision for the third term saying it would be a tenure of big decisions and key emphasis would be on uprooting corruption.

He also thanked TDP supremo Chandrababu Naidu and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar — his NDA allies — for the electoral successes in Andhra Pradesh and Bihar.

Election results 2024: INDIA bloc’s roller coaster from a faltering start to flying close to its target

INDIA bloc falls short of target, allies unite under one voice, strategize for future, despite initial setbacks.

The BJP won nine Lok Sabha seats and was leading in 10 other constituencies in Odisha, according to the Election Commission of India. The BJD was leading in the Jajpur Lok Sabha seat while the Congress won the Koraput Lok Sabha constituency, it said. Odisha has 21 Lok Sabha seats.

BJP leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan won from Vidisha Lok Sabha constituency in Madhya Pradesh by a whopping 8,21,408 votes, defeating his nearest Congress rival.

The former MP chief minister polled 11,16,460 votes while Congress’ Pratap Bhanu Sharma, a two-time parliamentarian, managed to get 2,95,052 votes.

This was Chouhan’s sixth victory from Vidisha, once represented by BJP stalwarts like former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee (1991), Sushma Swaraj (2009 and 2014) and newspaper baron Ramnath Goenka (1971).

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Manoj Tiwari defeated Congress’ Kanhaiya Kumar in the Northeast Delhi Lok Sabha seat by over 1.38 lakh votes. Mr. Tiwari, the only candidate to be repeated by the party, clinched the crucial seat for a record third time.

A Bhojpuri singer, the BJP leader trounced fellow Purvanchali Kanhaiya Kumar by a margin of 1,38,778 votes. The BJP won all seven seats in Delhi in the 2014 and 2019 general elections and is set to repeat the feat for the third time.

The BJP’s southern push for the 131 Lok Sabha seats from the five States of Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu resulted in a mixed bag on June 4, with the party losing a few seats in Karnataka while opening its account for the first time in Kerala.

The Congress emerged as the single largest party in the south with 42 seats, while the BJP was ahead in 29. The BJP’s gains mainly came from Telangana, where it was ahead in eight seats compared to the four it won in 2019. In Karnataka, however, the party only won 17 seats, compared to the 25 seats it had won in the 2019 election.

Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) president Nitish Kumar will on June 5 take part in the NDA meeting scheduled in the national capital, highly placed sources told PTI. Mr. Kumar, whose party is set to grab 12 out of the State’s 40 seats, will be leaving for Delhi in the morning.

Mr. Kumar had visited Delhi during the weekend when he met top BJP leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. With the BJP falling short of a majority, Mr. Kumar is being seen as a key player whom the Opposition INDIA bloc is also sending fillers.

Election results 2024: JD(U) defies all election predictions, with Nitish calling the shots yet again

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar emerges as potential kingmaker in Lok Sabha elections, JD(U) performs better than expected.

The ruling Mahayuti alliance won 11 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra, while the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) bagged nine as results of 20 constituencies out of the total 48 that have been declared so far.

While the ruling Shiv Sena and the BJP won five seats each, the Ajit Pawar-led NCP bagged one. In the MVA, the Shiv Sena (UBT) got five seats, followed by Congress three and NCP (SP) one.

Of the Mahayuti constituents, the BJP won Akola, Nagpur, Palghar, Satara and Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg seats, Shiv Sena got Buldhana, Kalyan, Mumbai North-West, Maval, Hatkanangle and NCP bagged Raigad.

From the MVA side, Shiv Sena (UBT) bagged Yavatmal-Washim, Mumbai North-East, Mumbai South-Central, Mumbai South and Shirdi, the Congress won Amravati, Nandurbar and Mumbai North-Central, and NCP (SP) got Dindori.

Buoyed by the INDIA bloc’s show in the Lok Sabha polls, Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray pushed for staking a claim to form the next government at the Centre and said the Opposition alliance’s leaders will meet on June 4 in New Delhi to decide on the Prime Minister’s face.

Addressing a news conference after results and trends showed the BJP will miss the simple majority mark of 272 seats, Mr. Thackeray said leaders of the Congress and other parties are holding talks with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Telegu Desam Party (TDP) head Chandrababu Naidu to explore the possibility of their entry into the bloc.

The Congress has put a spanner in the plans of the BJP to make a clean sweep in the northeastern states which have 25 Lok Sabha seats, as the grand old party is set to bag seven seats including two in violence-hit Manipur. 

The BJP is likely to win 13 seats in these States. In Manipur where the Congress could not open its account in 2019 general elections, its candidates Angomcha Bimol Akoijam and Alfred Kanngam S. Arthur have won both Inner Manipur and Outer Manipur seats.

The BJP had won Inner Manipur seat in 2019 while its ally Naga Peoples Front (NPF) had claimed the Outer Manipur seat.

A National Democratic Alliance (NDA) where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is not dominant, backed by a full majority, is tantamount to turning the clock back 26 years to May 15, 1998, when former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee created the first avatar of the NDA and formed a government that held power between 1998 and 2004.

The 2024 Lok Sabha election result, which has left the BJP with less than a majority of seats, will likely lead to changes — not just in terms of how the coalition, if it fructifies in governmental terms, is run, but also in the internal dynamics of the BJP.

The NDA’s victory in the Lok Sabha polls is the “blessing of people” for Prime Minister Narendra Modi who has worked hard over the past 10 years to fulfil the dreams of the poor, women, backward and the youth, Home Minister Amit Shah said on Tuesday.

He also said this is the victory of Mr. Modi’s marathon effort in the last 23 years of public life, without taking a single day off, without caring for himself, and working day and night only for the welfare of the country and the countrymen.

He said the third consecutive victory has made it clear that the public’s trust is “only with Modi”.

Even before the results are declared, Bhutan’s PM Tshering Tobgay congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that he looks forward to working together.

Samajwadi Party candidate Awadhesh Prasad won by a margin of over 54,000 votes in Faizabad parliamentary seat over his nearest BJP rival Lallu Singh, according to the Election Commission. Mr. Singh is the sitting MP from Faizabad seat, which falls in the Ayodhya district.

The results in Ayodhya assume significance as the Ram Temple of Ayodhya has been the fulcrum of BJP’s politics in the 1990s, which had catapulted it significantly at the national level.

During campaigning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Barabanki and Hamirpur on May 17 had claimed that the Congress and the Samajwadi Party would run a bulldozer over the Ram temple if elected to power, and asked them to take lessons from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on where bulldozers should be used instead.

On January 22, an idol of the new Ram Lalla was consecrated at the Ayodhya Temple, in a landmark event led by the PM who also gave a clarion call to go beyond the grand mandir’s construction to build the foundation of a “strong, capable and divine” India of the next 1,000 years.

BJP candidate Maneka Gandhi lost the Sultanpur seat to the Samajwadi Party’s Rambhual Nishad by a margin of 43,174 votes, according to Election Commission figures. While Mr. Nishad secured 4,44,330 votes, Ms. Gandhi got 4,01,156 votes, according to the EC website. The third placed Udayraj Verma of the BSP secured 1,63,025 votes.

DMK president and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Tuesday said though the BJP launched a “psychological onslaught in the name of exit polls,” it has been reduced to the level that it was not able to win a simple majority to form the government at the centre.

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab could manage to victory in just three Lok Sabha seats in Punjab, falling way short of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s stated target of winning all 13 parliamentary constituencies of the State.

On the other hand, the Congress has bagged six seats and is leading on one while the Shiromani Akali Dal won just one seat.

The Arvind Kejriwal-led party had no truck with its INDIA bloc ally the Congress for the high-stakes poll battle in the State. They fought the electoral battle separately, giving enough fodder to the rival parties to target them for “doing a drama” by contesting on their own.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has shown significant strength in the metro cities in the Lok Sabha elections, securing substantial leads in urban centers such as Delhi, Bangalore and Pune. However, Mumbai region defied the trend. 

The INDIA bloc has demonstrated its prowess in the rural regions, capturing the majority of votes in the countryside. In Delhi, the BJP has maintained a stronghold, with its candidates leading in all of the city’s seven constituencies. The trend is similar in Bangalore, where the urban voters have largely supported the BJP representatives, reflecting the alliance’s appeal among the metropolitan electorate. Pune has also seen a favourable outcome for the NDA, with the alliance securing leads in several constituencies within the city. 

Conversely, the INDIA bloc, a coalition of various opposition parties, has resonated more with the rural population. The bloc has gained substantial support in the vast rural stretches of the country, securing significant leads in areas like Chhattisgarh’s Korba, Uttar Pradesh’s Aonla, Basti and Lalganj among other constituencies. This performance underscores the coalition’s appeal to the agrarian community and rural voters, who have favoured its candidates over those of the NDA.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi won the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh by a margin of 3,90,030 votes, bettering his mother Sonia Gandhi’s victory margin in 2019.

According to the Election Commission (EC), Rahul Gandhi secured a total of 6,87,649 votes against the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Dinesh Pratap Singh who got 2,97,619 votes. Thakur Prasad Yadav of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) secured 21,624 votes.

Five years ago, former Congress president Sonia Gandhi won the seat by a margin of 1,67,178 votes against Dinesh Pratap Singh. Sonia Gandhi, who was elected to the Lok Sabha from Rae Bareli continuously since 2004, vacated the seat earlier this year and got elected to the Rajya Sabha.

Prime Minister Modi on June 4 is scheduled to address the party workers at 8 p.m. from the party headquarters, as the Election Commission is yet to announce the final results for the Lok Sabha election.

Congress candidate Kishori Lal Sharma emerged as a giant killer by defeating Union Minister and BJP candidate Smriti Irani by a margin of over 1.67 votes from Amethi, the bastion of the Nehru-Gandhi family in Uttar Pradesh, on June 4.

According to the Election Commission, Irani bagged 3,72,032 votes, while Mr. Sharma polled 5,39,228 votes. The BSP candidate got 34,534 votes.

Reacting to his win, Mr. Sharma expressed his gratitude to the people of Amethi and the Congress party, saying the 18th Lok Sabha election in Amethi will be the biggest example of a strong and empowered democratic country.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union Cabinet is likely to meet at 11.30 a.m. on June 5, 2024.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and another BJP candidate Tapir Gao won the two Lok Sabha seats in Arunachal Pradesh, according to the Election Commission.

Both retained the seat. Mr. Rijiju won the Arunachal West Lok Sabha seat, defeating his nearest rival Nabam Tuki of the Congress by a margin of 1,00,738 votes, the Election Commission said.

National Congress Party (SP) supremo Sharad Pawar rubbished the speculations that he had reached out to Janata Dal (United) chief Nitish Kumar as counting of votes in the Lok Sabha elections is underway. During a press conference in Maharashtra’s Mumbai, Sharad Pawar said that he has not spoken with anyone yet.

The speculations came as the ruling BJP-led NDA is leading on around 292 seats and the opposition coalition, INDIA bloc, is leading on 285 seats. The BJP-led coalition has crossed the majority mark of 272 required to form a government while the INDIA bloc would need at least 70 seats to entertain hopes of coming to power.

TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu has emerged as a possible kingmaker, being the second largest party in the ruling NDA alliance behind the BJP, which will most likely fail to attain a simple majority in the 543-member Lok Sabha. This means the BJP will depend on TDP and Janata Dal (United) to form a government. The party, however, ruled out support to the Opposition INDIA bloc.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee thanked the people of West Bengal for the mandate. “PM Narendra Modi should immediately resign as he has lost credibility... He many parties, people broke his morale... India has won and Modi has lost... I will try to ensure that Modi is out of power and INDIA bloc is in,” she said.

“We won Basirhat Lok Sabha seat, where Sandeshkhali is located, despite canards spread against our mothers and sisters,” she added. BJP’s hope to make its strongest political statement from the Sandeshkhali-inclusive Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency looked to have been dashed to the ground as its candidate Rekha Patra was outsmarted by TMC veteran Haji Nurul Islam.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi won the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat by a margin of more than 3,64,000. As of 6:30 p.m., he is leading in Rae Bareli by over 3.9 lakh votes. Mr. Gandhi ran for both seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Both ‘kingmakers’ Janata Dal (U) and TDP will attend an NDA meet to be held in New Delhi on June 5 as INDIA alliance leaders are set to meet on the same day to decide the future course of action.

The INDIA bloc will meet and decide on June 5 whether to approach former partners such as the JD(U) and the TDP to attempt government formation at the Centre, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said.

“We are going to have a meeting with our partners tomorrow. These questions will be raised and answered there,” Mr. Gandhi told a press conference here when asked if the Congress and its allies will approach parties that are part of the NDA to try and form a government.

He was addressing the press conference with senior Congress leaders as the Lok Sabha poll results and trends showed the BJP was set to become the single-largest party but would fall short of the magic figure of 272.

“We won’t say anything without asking the opinion of our allies. Our alliance will decide tomorrow and whatever they decide we will act on that,” he said.

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge in his first press conference after Lok Sabha poll results said that voters “understood Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s lies about Congress manifesto.”

“This is a victory of people and democracy... People have not given clear mandate to any party; mandate is against Narendra Modi... Government machinery created obstacles in our path; from start to finish our campaign was positive,” he said.

Former Karnataka Chief Ministers Basavaraj Bommai and H.D. Kumaraswamy, and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s son-in-law Radhakrishna Doddamani were among those who won the Lok Sabha polls in Karnataka.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi won from Dharwad segment. According to the data available from the Election Commission so far, BJP won seven seats and is leading in 10 other segments in the State, which has a total of 28 constituencies.

The ruling Congress in Karnataka has won in one seat and is leading in eight, while JD(S), which fought the polls in alliance with the BJP, won two seats.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi won the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat, defeating Congress’s Ajay Rai by a margin of 1,52,513 votes, as per Election Commission data.

Congress leaders met Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and other election commissioners and raised the issue of alleged slow counting of votes especially in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

The delegation including Abhishek Singhvi and Salman Khurshid demanded that the poll body give real time figures on its website after every round of counting in all the constituencies.

“We only want updating of results on the election website after different rounds of counting. But, we have noticed that the process of counting after 2.30 p.m. has slowed down especially in Uttar Pradesh,” Mr. Singhvi told PTI.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won Ahmedabad East, Ahmedabad West, Mahesana and Junagadh Lok Sabha constituencies in Gujarat as the Election Commision of India declared early results of the Lok Sabha elections.

H.S. Patel won from Ahmedabad East by a margin of 4.61 lakh votes, Dinesh Makwana won from Ahmedabad West by 2.86 lakh votes, Haribhai Patel won from Mahesana by 3.28 lakh votes and Rajesh Chudasama won from Junagadh by 1.35 lakh votes.

All of them defeated their nearest Congress rivals. H.S. Patel and Chudasama were sitting MPs while Haribhai Patel and Makwana are new faces.

At least 15 Muslim candidates are leading in various constituencies across the country, including the TMC candidate from Berhampore, Yusuf Pathan who has maintained a comfortable lead against Congress veteran Adhir Ranjan Choudhary. A total of 78 Muslims were in the fray in the Lok Sabha elections this year.

Congress candidate Imran Masood from Saharanpur is leading by. over 80,000 votes while Iqra Choudhary, a 29-year-old candidate from Kairana is also leading by over 60,000. Afzal Ansari, incumbent MP from Ghazipur, is also leading in his seat by over 1 lakh votes while AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi is leading by over 3 lakh votes in Hyderabad where he is also the incumbent MP.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh alleged that officials in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj, Bansgaon, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar are being pressurised.

“Administrative officers should remember that the government is changing and this playing with democracy will not be accepted,” he said in a post on X.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anil Desai won the Mumbai South-Central seat by a margin of 53,384 votes, defeating sitting Shiv Sena MP Rahul Shewale.

BJP candidate Rajeev Chandrasekhar conceded defeat to Congress’ Shashi Tharoor in the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha seat, but said that the election result in Kerala indicates that people are increasingly supporting the saffron party.

Mr. Chandrasekhar, who is the Union Minister of State for Information Technology in the outgoing Cabinet, told PTI that it was “disappointing” that he lost, even though the BJP fought a very strong battle in the State.

Former CM Basavaraj Bommai, B.S. Yediyurappa’s son B.Y. Raghavendra of BJP won Haveri and Shimoga Lok Sabha seats, respectively.

Akhilesh Yadav’s stock rose dramatically with his Samajwadi Party cutting the ruling BJP down to size in Uttar Pradesh. As the trends came in, the SP was leading on 34 seats as against the BJP’s 36 seats. The tally is a spoiler for the BJP which had claimed it will sweep the State from where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is an MP.

Congress candidate Anuradha Rana on Tuesday won the Lahaul and Spiti bypolls by defeating Independent candidate and former BJP minister Ram Lal Markanda by a margin of 1,960 votes.

It was after 52 years that a woman contested elections from Lahaul and Spiti and Rana became the second woman to win from the assembly segment.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s son-in-law Radhakrishna Doddamani won the Gulbarga seat in Karnataka by 27,205 votes.

The Congress won in the Tura seat in Meghalaya, while the Voice of the People’s Party (VPP) was ahead in the Shillong constituency, according to the Election Commission.

Congress candidate Saleng Sangma won the Tura seat over NPP MP Agatha Sangma, who is the sister of CM Conrad K. Sangma, by over 1.5 lakh votes.

VPP candidate Ricky AJ Syngkon was ahead in the Shillong seat over three-term Congress MP Vincent H Pala by 3.7 lakh votes.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi will address the press at AICC Headquarters in New Delhi at 5:30 p.m. on June 4, 2024.

AAP candidate Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer won in Punjab’s Sangrur Lok Sabha seat against SAD (Amritsar) nominee Simranjit Singh Mann by over 1.7 lakh votes, according to the Election Commission.

The JD(S), headed by former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, emerged victorious in Mandya Lok Sabha constituency as H.D. Kumaraswamy won by over 2.9 lakh votes. In Kolar, party leader M. Mallesh Babu won against Congress candidate K.V. Gowtham by over 71,000 votes.

The regional outfit joined the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in September last year and fought the Lok Sabha elections in alliance with the BJP, and was contesting in three seats — Mandya, Hassan and Kolar.

Congress’ Amethi Lok Sabha candidate Kishori Lal Sharma has secured a lead of more than one lakh votes over sitting BJP MP and Union Minister Smriti Irani, dubbed a giant slayer after she defeated Rahul Gandhi from the seat in 2019.

Another unexpected result is unfolding in West Bengal’s Baharampur seat, where TMC candidate and first-time contender Yusuf Pathan is leading against Congress’ leader in the outgoing Lok Sabha and six-time MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury by 29,781 votes.

Union Minister and two-time MP from Kheri, Ajay Kumar Teni, is trailing behind Samajwadi Party’s (SP) Utkarsh Verma Madhur by 30,337 votes.

Senior BJP leader and former Union minister Maneka Gandhi is also trailing in the Sultanpur constituency against SP candidate Rambhual Nishad by 22,637 votes.

Annamalai Kuppusamy, the BJP Tamil Nadu president, is trailing in Coimbatore against DMK’s Ganapathy Rajkumar P by 33,230 votes.

AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi was leading by 3,15,811 votes against his nearest BJP rival K. Madhavi Latha at 3.05 PM in the Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency in Telangana as the counting of votes was underway. Mr. Owaisi got 6,12,842, while Madhavi Latha secured 2,97,031 votes, according to the Election Commission website.

Indian National Congress (INC) delegation will meet the Election Commission of India at 3:30 p.m. on June 4, 2024.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on June 4 said an INDIA bloc meeting will likely be held in Delhi tomorrow. “The public has taught a lesson to BJP in this election,” he said.

The INDIA bloc was leading in 44 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh and the BJP-led NDA in 35, according to trends on the Election Commission website.

INDIA bloc parties SP and Congress were leading in 37 and 7 seats, the election panel’s data for polls to the 80 parliamentary constituencies in the state showed.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was leading in 33 seats and its allies Rashtriya Lok Dal and Apna Dal in one seat each.

Independent candidate Mohmad Haneefa has established a lead of over 28,000 votes over his nearest Congress rival from Ladakh Lok Sabha constituency, according to the Election Commission trends. Haneefa has got 60,365 votes so far as against Congress candidate Tsering Namgyal who got 32,195 votes and BJP’s Tashi Gyalson who bagged 24,953 votes.

Congress candidate Geniben Thakor is leading in Banaskantha by over 20,000 votes. The Opposition party won a Lok Sabha seat for the first time in Gujarat since 2014. In Banaskantha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said on May 1, 2024, “If you have two buffaloes, the Congress will take away one if voted to power.”

BJP’s Govind Makthappa Karjol won the Chitradurga Lok Sabha seat by a margin of over 48,000 votes against Congress’s B.N. Chandrappa.

Staring at one of its worst electoral defeats from Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party is trailing behind in all 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh.

Currently, the BSP has garnered about 1.92% votes in the country and 9.16% votes in Uttar Pradesh, as per Election Commission data.

At 2.00 p.m., according to the poll panel, Samajwadi Party candidates were leading on 37 Lok Sabha seats in the politically crucial U.P., while their INDIA bloc ally Congress was leading on seven seats.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party has largely managed to retain its stronghold seats, the constituencies it won in the last three elections or more.

Of the 94 seats the BJP won in the last three Lok Sabha elections, it leads in 79 and trails in 15 in 2024. The trends are based on data published until 11.45 am. The numbers will be updated as more votes are counted.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor appears to be headed for a fourth consecutive term from Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency. With only around 50,000 votes left to be counted, Mr. Tharoor has amassed a sizeable lead of 11,281 votes over BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar.

Congress leader Kishori Lal Sharma is leading by a comfortable margin of over 88,000 votes in the Amethi parliamentary seat against the BJP’s Smriti Irani, who defeated Rahul Gandhi in 2019.

According to the latest trends available on the Election Commission website, Mr. Sharma is leading by 88,908 votes. Mr. Gandhi represented the Amethi Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh from 2004 to 2019.

In the 2019 general election, he lost the seat to Irani by a margin of 55,102 votes. Gandhi was elected to the Lok Sabha from Kerala’s Wayanad.

PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti conceded defeat from Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha seat against NC leader Mian Altaf. 

Congress leader Charanjit Singh Channi won by a comfortable margin of 1,75,993 votes against his BJP rival Sushil Rinku in Punjab’s Jalandhar Lok Sabha constituency, according to Election Commission data.

BJP’s K. Annamalai trails by 25,000 votes at the end of round five of vote counting in Coimbatore. Ganapathi P. Rajkumar of DMK leads with 1,27,784 votes, BJP is second with 1,02,784 votes and AIADMK’s Singai Ramachandran has 53,811 votes.

JD(S) Member of Parliament Prajwal Revanna, facing charges of rape and sexual abuse of many women, is trailing in Hassan Lok Sabha seat in Karnataka. After 17 rounds of counting, Congress candidate Shreyas M. Patel is leading by over 43,000 votes. 

In Rajasthan, BJP’s Manju Sharma won the Jaipur Lok Sabha seat by defeating her nearest rival, Pratap Singh Khachariyawas of Congress, with a margin of 3,31,767 votes. Manju Sharma polled 8,86,850 votes.

Ms. Sharma (64), a new face, was picked by the BJP over sitting MP Ramcharan Bohra, who had won the seat by a margin of 4,30,626 votes in 2019. The Jaipur Lok Sabha seat is considered a BJP stronghold.

The BJP is leading in 13 other seats in Rajasthan and the Congress on eight, the EC website showed.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has surpassed Sonia Gandhi’s 2019 victory margin from the Rae Bareli constituency and is now leading by 2,27,535 votes against his nearest rival Dinesh Pratap Singh of the BJP.

Rahul Gandhi, who contested from Rae Bareli seat for the first time, was ahead of the BJP candidate since the beginning of the counting. Mr. Singh is also a Minister in the Yogi Adityanath cabinet.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has scripted a comeback to gain a lead of 3,947 votes against BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar after lagging behind for nearly two hours in Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency. Around 1.5 lakh votes are yet to be counted in the constituency.

Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) vice-president and Baramulla Lok Sabha candidate Omar Abdullah accepted defeat in Baramulla against Independent candidate Abdul Rashid Sheikh, after he was seen trailing by 1,28,441 votes.

Six Ministers of the Modi Government are trailing from Uttar Pradesh. These include Smriti Irani, Kaushal Kishore, Anupriya Patel, Sanjeev Balyan, Mahendra Nath Pandey, Ajay Kumar Mishra Teni. Maneka Gandhi is trailing in Sultanpur. Out of five candidates from the Yadav family of Samajwadi Party, only Aditya Yadav, son of Shivpal Yadav, is trailing in Budaun.

Trinamool Congress general secretary and Diamond Harbour candidate Abhishek Banerjee is leading with a margin of over four lakh votes to nearest BJP candidate Abhijit Das.

In a close contest in Haryana, Congress’ Raj Babbar and BJP’s Naveen Jindal lead with a margin of less than 5,000 votes over their nearest rivals.

1. The initial trends show the BJP leading in 235 seats, much less than predicted in exit polls, with the India bloc making big gains, crossing the 200-mark in terms of leads.

2. The EC trends show a big upset for the BJP in Uttar Pradesh, where the Samajwadi Party is leading in over 35 seats at 11.45 a.m. The BJP had won 62 seats in UP in 2019.

On the Faizabad seat in Ayodhya district, the BJP’s Lallu Singh is trailing by 2,244 votes against the SP’s Awadhesh Prasad.

The BJP continues to maintain its lead on all 29 seats of Madhya Pradesh with the Congress trailing on the only seat that it had won in 2019 — Chhindwara, according to the latest trends by the Election Commission.

In Chhindwara, BJP’s Bunty Vivek Sahu had gained a lead of over 60,000 votes against Congress’ incumbent MP Nakul Nath, the son of former CM and nine-term MP Kamal Nath.

NOTA has polled about 1.7 lakh votes so far in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore where the Congress’ official candidate Akshay Kanti Bam had withdrawn his nomination eight days before the elections. Following the setback, the Congress-led INDIA alliance had run a campaign in favour of NOTA across the constituency.

BJP’s incumbent MP Shankar Lalwani is currently leading by over 7.8 lakh votes.

BJP continues to sweep in the National Capital’s seven constituencies, in Northwest Delhi BJP’s Yogendra Chandolia is leading with the highest margin turnout with 1,03,549, with Congress’s Udit Raj trailing.

Neck-on-neck fight between Congress and BJP in Haryana as both parties lead in five seats. Congress Rajya Sabha MP Deepender Hooda and former Congress Haryana president Kumari Selja lead by over one lakh votes in Rohtak and Sirsa Lok Sabha seats respectively.

Former BJP Chief Minister Manohar Lal leads with over one lakh votes in Karnal.

The BJP-led NDA was leading in a majority of the 40 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar, according to trends available by the Election Commission around noon. The JD(U) headed by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who returned to the NDA barely five months ago, was ahead of rivals in 14 out of 16 seats it had contested.

The BJP, which had contested 17 seats, was leading in 11, while junior ally Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) was ahead in all the five in its kitty, including Hajipur, where its president Chirag Paswan had established a lead of about 24,000 votes.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi leads by 1,92,135 votes over his nearest rival Annie Raja of the Communist Party of India in the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency. While Mr. Gandhi has polled 3,47,608 votes, Ms. Raja got 1,55,473 votes.

BJP candidate K. Surendran is in third position with 86,764 votes.

Actor-turned politician Suresh Gopi is likely to make history in Kerala as BJP looks to secure its first-ever Lok Sabha seat in the State. Mr. Gopi commands a massive lead — over 56,000 votes — in the Thrissur constituency as of 12 noon. 

The BJP had its best performance in Thrissur through Mr. Gopi in the 2019 elections. He got 2,93,822 votes (28.19%), which was 17% more than the former election. The two consecutive visits of Mr. Modi emphasise the importance given by the BJP to Thrissur.

BSE Sensex down 7.14%, or 5,461.35 points to 71,007 points at 12.10 p.m. amid counting of election results. Nifty50 has also lost 1,673 points, and is trading 6.88% lower at 21,663.35 points

Leader of Opposition in the 17th Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury is trailing in his home constituency of Baharampur. TMC candidate and former cricketer Yusuf Pathan is leading in the constituency by a margin of 5,539 votes.

BJP candidates leading at 14 of the 25 Lok Sabha seats in Rajasthan, while Congress is leading at eight seats and three INDIA bloc parties at one seat each. The INDIA bloc parties are CPI(M), Rashtriya Loktantrik Party and Bharatiya Adivasi Party, leading at Sikar, Nagaur and Banswara, respectively.

The leading BJP candidates include Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Arjun Ram Meghwal, Bhupender Yadav and Om Birla.

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra has taken a substantial lead of 31,367 votes over BJD candidate and former Mumbai police commissioner Arup Mohan Patnaik in Puri Lok Sabha seat.

In the 13 constituencies in Maharashtra where Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and the Shiv Sena (UBT), led by Uddhav Thackeray, are fighting head-to-head in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, both the factions are in a very tight contest. Of the 13, Shiv Sena (UBT) is leading in 6 while the Shinde-led party is leading in 7. The latter is part of the NDA alliance while the Thackarey-led party is with the INDIA bloc. 

In the two seats where the Nationalist Congress Party led by Ajit Pawar and the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) are fighting head-to-head, the Sharad Pawar-led faction, which is supporting the INDIA alliance, is leading in both the seats. Ajit Pawar’s NCP is supporting the NDA coalition this time.

The battle for Baramati is leaning in Supriya Sule’s favour, while the NCP vs. NCP standoff in Shirur is tilting in Dr. Amol Kolhe’s favour: both are from the NCP-SP faction.

In Maharashtra, battle lines have been drawn between the Mahayuti alliance— comprising of the BJP, Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party and Rashtriya Samaj Paksha (RSP) and the Maha Vikas Aghadi– with the Indian National Congress, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) (Shiv Sena-UBT), and the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) (NCP–SP). 

As per early trends based on the data available on the Election Commission’s website, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is leading in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi constituency with 12,000 votes after trailing for a brief period. Congress candidate Ajay Rai is however the second lead. 

The Varanasi Lok Sabha seat is one of the most important constituencies among the total of 543 parliamentary seats with Mr. Modi aiming for a third consecutive victory since choosing it as a launchpad in 2014 as the Prime Ministerial candidate of the BJP.

In 2019, the Prime Minister polled 6,74,664 votes, which is roughly 63% of the total votes polled, as his nearest rival Shalini Yadav of the Samajwadi Party (SP) secured 1,95,159 votes with the PM emerging victorious by over 4,78,000 votes. On the other hand, Mr. Rai who contested as a Congress candidate, polled 1,52,548 votes. He had also contested the 2014 Lok Sabha polls against Mr. Modi and came third polling 75,614 votes.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik is leading marginally by 156 votes from Kantabanji Assembly constituency, the second Assembly segment he is fighting from.

A number of incumbent ministers in the Naveen Patnaik Government, which was dissolved on Monday, are trailing.

BJP candidate Kangana Ranaut is leading over Congress’ Vikramaditya Singh by over 31,000 votes in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi Lok Sabha seat, as per Election Commission trends.

BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar’s lead appears to be growing in Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency steadily. He currently leads by 4948 votes against Shashi Tharoor of the Congress. With the counting of votes in the urban constituencies almost complete, the voting pattern along the region’s coastal belt will determine the outcome of the poll here.

BJP leader and Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar has snatched the lead in Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency over his nearest rival, Shashi Tharoor of the INC.

He currently leads by over 4,900 votes.

The Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) surged ahead in very early trends, securing leads in over 250 parliamentary seats with the Opposition INDIA bloc putting up a strong fight, leading in around 150 seats as the counting of votes for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections began on Tuesday morning after a gruelling election that was held in seven phases, staggered between April 11 and May 19.

As per the Election Commission of India, 64.2 crore voters, including 31.2 crore women, participated in the 2024 General Elections to elect 543 members of the Lok Sabha from over 8,000 candidates from more than 700 parties.

‘Rajmata’ Amrita Roy of the BJP is pitted against Trinamool Congress’ incumbent but expelled MP Mahua Moitra in Krishnanagar Lok Sabha seat. As per latest EC trends, Ms. Roy is leading with 7,837 votes.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has a lead of 18,000 votes over BJP’s Dinesh Pratap Singh in Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is now leading in Varanasi with 619 votes, as per the Election Commission website. Congress candidate Ajay Rai is in second lead with 35,805 votes.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were on June 4 locked in a neck-and-neck contest in West Bengal as counting of postal ballots for the Lok Sabha polls got underway, with the former having a slight edge, TV channels reported.

Bengali news channel ABP Ananda reported that TMC was leading in three seats, while the BJP and the Congress were ahead in one seat each. Another Bengali news channel TV 9 Bangla, reported that TMC was leading in five, whereas the BJP was ahead in four and the Congress in one.

As per early trends, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan is leading from the Sambalpur seat. Sambalpur in western Odisha is set for a high-octane electoral battle between BJP leader and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) organising secretary Pranab Prakash Das.

The seat falls in the BJP stronghold of western Odisha where the party has a wide acceptance that is largely attributed to the presence of organisations affiliated to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

Andhra Pradesh BJP State President D. Purandeswari is leading with 8984 votes against her rival and YSRCP Guduri Chakradhar in Rajahmundry Lok Sabha constituency.

According to the Election Commission of India, Ms. Purandeswari has received 47,696 votes while Mr. Chakradhar received 38,712 votes. 

Out of total 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh the INDIA alliance is leading on 44, while the BJP-led NDA is leading on 36 seats, as per early trends.

The Samajwadi Party (SP) on its own is ahead on 38 seats.

Counting has begun for the 29 Lok Sabha seats of Madhya Pradesh. At present, the BJP is leading on 23 seats, while the Congress is leading on the Mandla (ST) constituency.

On the Mandla seat, Congress’ Omkar Singh Markam is leading against Union Minister and BJP candidate Faggan Singh Kulaste.

In Arunachal Pradesh, BJP’s Kiren Rijiju is leading in Arunachal West. Meanwhile, the Congress is ahead in Arunachal East.

Two days after having secured the State’s top administrative office in Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh) for the second time, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) would be eyeing to secure representatives from the northeastern State.

Polling in the State for two constituencies, namely, Arunachal West and Arunachal East took place on April 19. The total voter turnout from the total 8,82,816 electors in the State was 77.68%. 

Sajad Lone of People’s Conference leading from Baramulla Lok Sabha seat and National Conference candidate Mian Altaf leading from Anantnag Lok Sabha seat. Former Chief Ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti trailing from Anantnag and Baramulla seats respectively.

Surat seat already won uncontested by the BJP after Congress nominee’s nomination papers were rejected and other candidates opted out from the race.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) hopes to bag most of the 25 Lok Sabha seats in the northeast while the Congress seeks to improve upon its 2019 show to give the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) an edge in the region.

Eight States constitute the northeast. Assam has 14 seats, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura have two seats each, and Mizoram, Nagaland, and Sikkim one each. The BJP rules Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, and Manipur and is a component of ruling coalitions in Nagaland and Meghalaya.

The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha, which won 31 of the 32 Assembly seats on June 2, is a constituent of the NDA.

The Surat Lok Sabha constituency is already in NDA’s account. BJP candidate Mukesh Dalal was elected unopposed from the Surat Lok Sabha constituency on April 22 after all other nominees dropped out of the contest. 

The nomination papers of the Congress candidates [main and substitute nominees] were rejected. On the last day of the withdrawal of nomination papers, four Independent candidates, BSP’s Pyarelal Bharti and three others belonging to little-known parties withdrew one by one in an unprecedented move, leaving the ruling party’s nominee as the sole candidate in the race.

In Maharashtra, battle lines have been drawn between the Mahayuti alliance— comprising of the BJP, Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party and Rashtriya Samaj Paksha (RSP) and the Maha Vikas Aghadi– with the Indian National Congress, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) (Shiv Sena-UBT), and the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) (NCP–SP). Bothfactions of the Shiv Sena are going head to head in 13 constituencies, while the NCP factions are competing against each other in two.

The counting of votes is scheduled to begin from 8 a.m. on June 4. The counting trends and results polls held from April 19 to June 1, in seven phases, will be available on the website of the Election Commission.

The Varanasi Lok Sabha seat is one of the most important constituencies among the total of 543 parliamentary seats with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi aiming for a third consecutive victory since choosing it as a launchpad in 2014 as the Prime Ministerial candidate of the BJP. 

The BJP is eyeing a record margin of victory with workers and leaders from different parts of Uttar Pradesh and some from other parts of India campaigning extensively for Mr. Modi with karyakartas (workers) in their door-to-door outreach highlighting what they describe as an unprecedented transformation of Kashi and asking voters to send a positive message in the likely third term of Mr. Modi.

The riverine island of Sandeshkhali in the Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency remained tense since allegations of land grabbing and sexual assault were levelled against a group of local Trinamool Congress leaders.

Sandeshkhali has been witness to widespread protests, signs of violence are still evident from villagers’ attacks against the now suspended TMC leaders, including at the poultry farm of Shiboprasad Hazra.

Over the last three months, however, the whole island has also been decked up with the flags of political parties and poll-related graffiti. The villagers still talk about the alleged atrocities by former TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his aides, Mr. Hazra and Uttam Gayen, but in hushed tones.

A neck and neck battle between the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been predicted for the Odisha Assembly Election 2024, the result of which will be announced on June 4. If re-elected, Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik, who has been in the role for 24 years, would assume power for the sixth term.

He may go on to become India’s longest serving Chief Minister, surpassing former Sikkim CM Pawan Kumar Chamling’s record.

After a hard-won Independence, India soon faced another gargantuan challenge — ensuring free and fair elections in a populous democracy still reeling from the after-effects of colonial rule.

Hours before the counting of votes for the 2024 Lok Sabha election, former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, who is contesting from the Rajnandgaon seat, alleged a mismatch in the details of the electronic voting machines (EVMs) provided in the Election Commission of India’s (EC) Randomisation Report and in Form 17C after polling in his constituency got over.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge wrote an open letter to the country’s bureaucracy and urged it to adhere to the Constitution and serve the nation without “fear, favour and ill-will against anybody”.

In a post on X, Mr. Baghel shared a two-page note showing the differences in the serial number of voting machines mentioned in the Randomisation Report of April 15 and Form 17C of April 26.
