Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah were “directly involved” in what he described as the “biggest stock market scam” in which retail investors lost ₹30 lakh crore, and demanded a joint parliamentary committee probe into it. He also said stock markets rose after “fake” exit polls and then crashed the day Lok Sabha polls votes were counted on June 4. Meanwhile, the JD(U), the support of which along with the TDP is crucial for the new NDA Government, will likely make a bid for “up to three” Cabinet berths, a senior leader of the Nitish Kumar-led party said on June 6. With 12 MPs, the JD(U) is the second biggest BJP ally after the Telugu Desam Party’s 16, and leaders of the saffron party are in touch with allies over ministerial berths and other issues.

“Why did the PM, Home Minister give investment advice to investors? After ‘fake’ exit polls, stock markets rose, and then crashed on June 4. Retail investors lost ₹30 lakh crore... this is the biggest stock market ‘scam’... BJP leaders had info that exit polls were wrong,” he said.

He also demanded a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to examine the role of the Prime Minister and Home Minister on the stock market crash. “The PM said multiple times that the stock market was going to boom at a time when he had information about the results. This issue is beyond Adani. They may be involved but the issue is much beyond them,” he said.

2024 election verdict against popular faces of BJP: CPIML leader Dipankar Bhattacharya

The Lok Sabha election mandate is against the BJP and its popular faces Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and Yogi Adityanath, CPIML leader Dipankar Bhattacharya has said.

In an interview with PTI, the CPI (Marxist-Leninst) Liberation (CPIML) general secretary also said though the results in Bihar were below the INDIA bloc’s expectation, the state played an important role in setting a narrative centred around issues like employment, and caste census.

“I think the mandate has a very clear direction. It is against the Modi regime. It is against the BJP as a party, but more particularly I think it is against the known faces of the BJP,” Mr. Bhattacharya said.

Targeting the BJP, he said the poll campaign was centred around Mr. Modi.

“In many places Mr. Modi went and said I am your PM. So, it’s a mandate against Mr. Modi, Mr. Shah, and Mr. Adiyanath in particular, especially if you look at the Uttar Pradesh results. I think this is the demand of the country that these people have lost the mandate in particular...there is no way that they should be at the helm of the government,” he said.

No alliance with Congress in future in West Bengal, say two Left Front parties

After a humiliating performance in the Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal, two parties in the Left Front — the All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) and the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) — said on June 5 that they were not in favour of any future alliance between the Left Front and the Congress.

The Left Front failed to win a single seat in the State while Congress bagged one in Malda South. The Trinamool Congress won 29 seats of the 42. The Left Front contested the Lok Sabha election from 33 seats, while the remaining nine constituencies had Congress candidates.

AIFB state secretary Naren Chatterjee said that the alliance between the Congress and the Left in both the Lok Sabha elections of 2019 and 2024 had not worked. The AIFB lost in all three constituencies of Barasat, Purulia, and Coochbehar that they contested. They had a vote share of merely 0.24% across West Bengal. Interestingly, both Purulia and Coochbehar also had Congress candidates even though the parties were in alliance.

Analysis: How Akhilesh Yadav thwarted BJP’s double engine in U.P.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s polarising speeches wherein he implied that the Opposition coalition would redistribute the wealth and reservations from Hindus and Dalits, to the Muslims is being held as a critical factor behind the BJP falling short of a simple majority. But the variability of the impact of the speeches made in the Awadh and Purvanchal belts of Uttar Pradesh in comparison to Bihar where the social fabric and subaltern equations are not much different is also a quandary to many.

The answer lies in Akhilesh Yadav patiently laying a caste siege around the BJP’s Hindutva pitch for nearly two years. The BJP crumbled under the weight of 37 seats and 33.6% vote share in the State that decides who forms the government in Delhi.

    Anuj Kumar reports.
