In the fourth wave, three persons, including two octogenarians, tested positive for COVID-19 in Dakshina Kannada on Thursday, December 21.
Dakshina Kannada District Health and Family Welfare Officer H.R. Thimmaiah said an 82-year-old resident of Udupi was admitted to a private hospital in Mangaluru on Tuesday, December 19, with respiratory problems. His throat swab samples were tested and was found positive for COVID-19. Dr. Thimmaiah said the patient is undergoing treatment in isolation and he is fine.
In the second case, an 83-year-old woman with co-morbidities was tested positive for COVID-19 in a private medical college in Sullia. She is undergoing treatment under home isolation.
A 40-year-old man from Mangaluru, who was admitted recently at a government hospital with severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) has also been tested positive for COVID-19. He is undergoing treatment in isolation. A total of 10 throat samples were tested at the facility in Government Wenlock Hospital on Thursday, an official said.
As per the guidelines of the State government, Dakshina Kannada district administration is doing an RT-PCR test of throat swabs of all persons found with Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI). Only one in 20 persons with influenza-like illness (ILI) will be tested for COVID-19 infection. The State government has set a target of testing 320 persons per day in Dakshina Kannada.
All educational institutions have been told to test all students with respiratory infection, including those returning from Kerala, at the nearest health facility. Similarly, those with COVID-19 infection symptoms following return from Sabarimala should also get tested for COVID-19. As many as 1 lakh testing kits were available at the testing centre at Government Wenlock Hospital. RT-PCR testing facility is also available at all the eight private medical colleges in Dakshina Kannada.
