Learning begins even before a child walks through the classroom door. Quality early childhood care and education (ECCE) aims to foster holistic growth, development and learning of children from birth to eight years of age. Early childhood, a period ranging from birth to 8 years of age, is recognized as a critical period of development, having a long-term impact on the later stages of an individual’s life. “Care” includes attention to health, hygiene and nutrition in a nurturing and safe environment. “Education” in the early childhood years is much broader than pre-schooling, capturing learning through early stimulation, guidance and a range of developmental activities and opportunities. ECCE includes both in-home and out-of-home settings, and can target children, parents, caregivers, and teachers. Young children’s experiences in the first years create the foundation for subsequent learning.
