The Slave Trade and Slavery Records in Mauritius (1721-1892

The collection consists of original documents on Slave Trade, the institution of Slavery, the life of the enslaved people, maroonage, abolition of slavery, apprenticeship and post-emancipation in colonial Mauritius from 1721 to 1892. The history of slavery in Mauritius dates back to the Dutch period. It was increasingly significant during the French colonial period as the colonial system relied heavily on slavery for its development. Slavery continued up to 1835 when it was abolished.
