Apple’s AI seems to be quite limited at the moment. This is evident from the new features the company has included in the first developer beta versions of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1.
Some of the new features in these versions include a redesigned Siri, which causes the edges of the phone to light up when activated, and the ability to maintain context in conversations. There are also new options for the Mail app, such as smart replies and email summaries, as well as the ability to search in the Photos app using natural language.
However, for now, the beta versions don’t include features such as image or emoji generation. They also don’t come with the anticipated improvements to Siri that would allow the assistant to use personal information from our phones to perform actions within apps, or the option to integrate ChatGPT into the user experience.
To install these updates, you’ll need an iPhone 15 Pro/Max, or one of the iPads or Macs with an Apple Silicon chip (M1 and above). However, users should bear in mind that AI options aren’t immediately available after the update installation. You have to request access to them by joining a waiting list from the devices’ settings menu.
Apple announced the introduction of its Apple Intelligence platform at WWDC in June 2024, but it will gradually roll out these AI options. According to Bloomberg, the options won’t be available when the company releases iOS 18. In fact, to test this preliminary version, users need to be registered as developers with Apple, which used to involve paying an annual fee of $99. Since 2023, Apple lets anyone with an Apple ID download developer betas.
