ERMP Update: Emergency Cholera Response in Yemen Emergency Response "BFD Intensifies Emergency Cholera Response in Northern Yemen: Medical Care, Facility Upgrades, and Prevention Efforts Safeguard Thousands" BFD is working tirelessly to combat this outbreak, ensuring that medical care, facility upgrades, and prevention measures are in place to safeguard the health of those most in need." Yemen's Building Foundation for Development (BFD), with support from the International Rescue Committee (IRC), continues its critical response to the cholera outbreak in northern Yemen, focusing on Amran, Al Mahwit, and Hajjah governorates. Since April 2024, BFD's emergency intervention has provided life-saving medical care and hygiene promotion activities across these regions, reaching thousands of vulnerable individuals. In Amran and Al Mahwit, BFD has treated 2,385 suspected cholera cases at Diarrhea Treatment Centers (DTCs) in Huth and Jumhori Hospitals. Similarly, in Hajjah, 3,146 cases have been supported through BFD's services at Al Jumhori Hospital's DTC and three Oral Rehydration Centers (ORCs). The total number of cases treated across these areas has now reached 5,431. To address the increasing demand, BFD has also expanded facilities, including the construction of a new assessment building at Al Jumhori Hospital in Al Mahwit. Furthermore, 64 healthcare workers in the three governorates have been trained on cholera prevention and infection control, while 61,269 individuals have received hygiene promotion messages through community outreach sessions. Cholera prevention kits have been distributed to 4,358 households, and BFD continues to monitor water quality and disinfect contaminated sources in collaboration with local authorities. These efforts are aimed at curbing the spread of cholera, protecting communities, and ensuring the ongoing capacity of healthcare facilities to handle the rising number of cases. https://lnkd.in/d8mstYnn

📣 𝗪𝗙𝗣'𝘀 𝟯𝟬𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟯 Our final day of the APC was my favourite. We started with a deep dive into Capacity Sharing and Capacity Strengthening (a topic I am particularly invested in as I am now tasked with developing WFP's Capacity Strengthening strategy). The session featured Cansu Güngör of Oxfam, Vlad Trokhin of Peaceful Heaven of Kharkiv / Мирне Небо Харкова, and our Chief Cheryl Harrison of the Delivery and Assurance Service of WFP. The session was incredibly rich, drawing on the experience and the insights of our partners from around the globe. It started out as a panel discussion, but ended up a real dialogue amongst everyone in the room. We heard local voices from Uganda, Yemen, Ukraine, Zimbabwe, Sudan, and from most of our INGO partners. For me this was an incredible early consultation with our partners on a strategy that could have significant meaning and impact across all of our operations. We then introduced a new kind of session, an "operational clinic" where we made available WFP staff who worked in areas relevant to our partners for meaningful one-on-one conversations. The room was packed for almost two hours, with partners and WFP discussing everything from Partnership Agreements to our new Resilience Policy. Our final session was a somber reminder of what is at stake with the work that we do. We dug into the issue of famine prevention, specifically the role of collective advocacy to prevent famine. Expertly moderated by Rebecca Vetharaniam Richards of the Global Network Against Food Crises, who also provided a rich and sobering overview of the global situation, the session featured a discussion on how IPC analyses in Haiti informed WFP's programming by Jean-Martin Bauer (who has recently written a book on hunger, drawing on his experiences with WFP, see link in comments), Jennifer Poidatz of Catholic Relief Services, Osama Suliman of the Sudanese Red Crescent Society, and Amanda Rives Argeñal of World Vision, who capped the session with a discussion on the importance of collective action and advocacy. We closed a busy but productive three days with insightful questions and reflections from our partners, before Valerie Guarnieri, our Assistant Executive Director closed the consultation with some reflections on what we've achieved, where we need to go, and of course, a class photo 📷

Jihan fled with her children, leaving behind their home and memories, searching for safety. She found herself and her children in the Al-Suwaida camp in Marib .As a result of the climate changes they experienced , their shelter in the Al-Suwaida camp was subjected to heavy rains and accompanying floods, which seeped into their dwelling and tore their tent apart with the winds . The emergency response team was fully prepared to assist Jihan and her children by providing them with emergency response kits, which greatly helped alleviate their suffering and enhance their ability to withstand these climate changes . Jihan said, with tears of joy in her eyes : "The assistance provided by the team has given us a new beginning filled with hope to overcome the crisis we went through."
