About us

African Parks was founded in 2000 as an African solution to conserve Africa’s biodiversity for the benefit of people and wildlife. We take on responsibility for the long-term management of protected areas, in partnership with governments and local communities. Our goal is to restore and effectively manage these landscapes, making them ecologically, socially and financially sustainable so they can deliver a multitude of benefits for people and wildlife in perpetuity. By the close of 2023, African Parks was sustainably managing 22 protected areas in partnership with governments and communities in 12 countries.

African Parks rangers protect 22 protected areas across 12 countries, covering 20 million hectares of Africa's biodiversity. Many rangers come from local communities, playing a crucial role in connecting these areas to their neighbouring communities and helping to encourage support for protected area management. By supporting African Parks, you are helping rangers safeguard critical landscapes, restore wildlife, and uplift communities through education and sustainable livelihood initiatives. These efforts benefit the local communities and wildlife. We are excited to share that a generous donor has provided $50K to match your donation dollar for dollar. Help us raise $100K by donating today, doubling your impact, where every dollar counts. The latest camera trap footage from Matusadona National Park in Zimbabwe has sparked much excitement, capturing a burst of wildlife activity in once-depleted areas. The traps were placed in the park's remote mountainous escarpment by our dedicated Biodiversity Conservation team with the latest footage revealing an aardvark pup exploring with its mother, a leopard family gracefully moving through, and a crocodile basking in a seasonal pool. Since 2020, African Parks and the Matusadona team have been working with the local communities neighbouring the park as well as significantly improving conservation law enforcement. The success of these two combined objectives has resulted in the transformation of this much-neglected part of Matusadona, which at long last is showing signs of recovery. These sightings are therefore more than just data points; they are a sign of hope, and of the return of wildlife to Matusadona.

From days-long foot patrols through the dense forests of Chinko - African Parks, CAR in the Central African Republic, to camel-back patrols in the desert landscapes of Ennedi Natural and Cultural Reserve, horseback patrols in Zakouma National Park in Chad, or boat patrols in Bazaruto Archipelago National Park - Mozambique or Bangweulu Wetlands in Zambia –rangers traverse diverse and challenging terrain every day to ensure that nature is protected and that people and wildlife are safe. To adequately perform this challenging work, rangers require specialised equipment, training and resources. That’s why we are asking you to consider donating. Your support can help provide our rangers with the tools they need to do this important work. Thanks to a generous donor, every donation we receive for this campaign will be matched dollar for dollar up to $50,000– which means you can help unlock $100,000 for rangers across Africa. African Parks Rangers create safe spaces for people and wildlife. They connect communities and conservation efforts and play an essential role in helping to build conservation-led economies, where both people and wildlife can thrive. With more than 2,000 rangers protecting 20 million hectares of challenging landscapes, and countering threats to wildlife and communities, this is no easy task, which is why we are asking for your support. Help protect Africa’s biodiversity by supporting a ranger today. A generous donor will match your gift up to $50,000, to help us raise $100,000 to support rangers across the continent. Meet the Majete Rhino Tracking Team🦏 These dedicated rangers are key to the conservation of Majete Wildlife Reserve’s rhino population. Every day, they head out into the reserve to track and monitor these endangered animals. Working hand in hand with the Reserve’s Canine Unit, the team has been instrumental in reducing illegal activities and enhancing the species’ protection. The day begins by searching key water points and areas rhino frequent, looking for fresh tracks. Once they find signs of rhino activity, the trackers follow the trail until an animal is spotted. After observing the rhino's condition and confirming it’s safe and healthy, they photograph it 📸 and move on to the next. Why is this important? Rhino tracking helps us monitor population dynamics and understand their behaviour. It also ensures no rhino falls victim to poaching, safeguarding a species that’s critical to Majete's ecosystem. 📸 Lennart Van Der Berg #ConservationHeroes #RhinoTracking #MajeteWildlife #WildlifeProtection #AfricanParks #RhinoConservation #SaveTheRhinos

🐒Visitors to Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda may catch a glimpse of one of its most distinctive residents – the owl-faced monkey (Cercopithecus hamlyni). With a horizontal stripe across its brow ridge and a vertical stripe down to its lips, this species is named for these owl-like facial markings. These unique primates live in small groups of 10 individuals or fewer, and thrive in the south-eastern part of the Nshili area, at elevations ranging from 900 to 4,554 metres. Thanks to the abundance of food in this dense forest, they sustain themselves year-round with bamboo shoots, leaves, and herbs. The rainforests, lakes, rivers, and volcanoes of the Albertine Rift region are natural borders for this unusual-looking monkey, and it stands out among the 13 primates found in Nyungwe. 📸 2 Scott Ramsay 3-5 Gael Vande weghe #nyungwenationalpark #primemates #nyungweforest

The Liuwa Plain National Park team, in collaboration with The Game Changer Project, were honoured to hand over 12,500 books, a Hino truck, and a fish drying facility to the Lewanika community representatives yesterday! 📚🚛🐟 Zambia’s education policy across the country means every child has access to school but many rural areas face textbook shortages. To date, seven schools have received books to support their students ranging from early childhood to grade twelve. The Hino truck will help local fishers transport their dried fish to distant markets, boosting income and expanding their reach. Since 2018, The Game Changer Project, funded by Jumpstart, has been enhancing livelihoods, food security, and community relations around Liuwa Plain. They work closely with the park team and the local community resources board (CRB) to identify community needs and help meet them. #LiuwaPlain #Conservation #CommunityEmpowerment #AfricanParks #Education #Sustainability
