𝗦𝗣𝗢𝗧𝗟𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧 𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗔𝗖𝗞𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗧: 𝘏𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘐𝘴 𝘢 𝘛𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 Racism is the systematic dehumanisation of the "other" for one's own benefit. In South Africa, this has manifested as white supremacy, with the doubt about the humanity of Black people being used to organise economic and political life. A philosophical-historical study reveals that racism has always been a tool of white supremacy, with the doubt about "blackness" arising from and being directed by "whiteness". The reality in South Africa today continues to reflect this fundamental truth: racism is inherently white supremacy, and cannot be properly understood without engaging with African philosophy........ #equality #history #philosophy #Africa

𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗢: 𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 In essence, editing serves to polish a manuscript. This process, however, could take on various forms: • 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹/𝘀𝘂𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲/𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: This deals with major issues such as content, sense and flow. This is the “big picture” edit. • 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: Here the logical flow is and structure of the content is examined. • 𝗖𝗼𝗽𝘆/𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: Spelling errors, grammar and word choice are the order of the day here. • 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴: This is the final layer of polish. Swipe for a few examples of proofreading marks. 𝗘𝗫𝗖𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗣𝗨𝗕𝗟𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 Offering a contemporary exploration of the multifaceted landscape of Afrikaans linguistics, 𝘈𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘬𝘢𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘓𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘴: 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴 marks a seminal contribution to the field. This ground-breaking book, written 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 Afrikaans 𝙞𝙣 English, aims to broaden the language’s appeal, making it accessible to a worldwide audience. Compiled by Wannie Carstens and Nerina Bosman, this volume, for the first time, presents accessible insights into diverse linguistics subdisciplines, inviting international scholars to familiarise themselves with Afrikaans language studies. Throughout much of the late 19th and 20th centuries, Afrikaans scholars predominantly communicated in Afrikaans, resulting in a significant gap in the dissemination of knowledge about the language. The chapters in this book, written by prominent South Africans, as well as international scholars working in the field of Afrikaans, serve as a pivotal bridge, by providing essential historical context while also paying attention to the development of Afrikaans linguistics during the 20th century. The primary focus remains on illuminating 21st-century research trajectories, offering a comprehensive snapshot of contemporary scholarship in Afrikaans linguistics. 𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗔𝗗𝗗𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗢 𝗨𝗪𝗖 𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗦 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗘 We are thrilled to announce the release and imminent launch of 𝘎𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘩𝘪’𝘴 𝘈𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘓𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘤𝘺: 𝘗𝘩𝘰𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘹 𝘚𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 1904 𝘵𝘰 2024. 𝘈 𝘏𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘓𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 by Prof. Uma Mesthrie for UWC Press. Dive into the captivating journey of Mohandas Gandhi, who at thirty-five, purchased 100 acres of land in South Africa. This land, known as Phoenix Settlement, became a transformative experiment in cooperative living and a cornerstone in Gandhi's development of satyagraha—his principle of non-violent resistance. From its humble beginnings with just a modest hut and a few fruit trees, Phoenix Settlement blossomed into a thriving community embodying Gandhi's vision of a just and good lifestyle. The settlement was a melting pot of racial, linguistic, religious, and generational diversity, fostering unity and respect among its residents. Fast forward to 2024, Phoenix Settlement stands as a testament to Gandhi's enduring legacy, promoting social justice, peace, and equality. The book also explores the settlement's recognition as a national heritage site and its ongoing efforts to achieve UNESCO World Heritage status. Join us in celebrating this significant milestone in Gandhi's legacy and explore how his African journey shaped his philosophy and practice of non-violence. Launch Details: · Date: Saturday 26 October 2024 · Time: 17h30 - 19h00 · Venue: The Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, The Granary, Buitenkant Street, District Six, Cape Town · RSVP: https://lnkd.in/dirkRRuH Grab your copy now and embark on a historical voyage through one of the most influential settlements in Gandhi's life! 𝗔𝗨𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗥 𝗦𝗣𝗢𝗧𝗟𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧 We have the privilege of working with some extraordinary authors. Today we cast the spotlight on Professor Uma Mesthrie, an Emeritus Professor and previously Senior Professor in the Department of Historical Studies at the University of the Western Cape. Prof Mesthrie gives us a taste of her history, and (⚠️spoiler alert🚨) she touches on her new book... "I have been associated with the History Department at the University of the Western Cape for over three decades and am currently an Emeritus Professor. I developed a love for history because I enjoyed archival research which yielded original documents about the past. It was a joy to unearth something new every day after searching through dusty boxes. I later developed a love for oral history which involved meeting people who narrated their lives to me and enriched my own life. My research interests and published works include group areas, forced removals, land restitution, immigration and documents of identity. Indian-South African connections form a core body of my work. Two of my books, 'From Cane Fields to Freedom: a Chronicle of Indian South African Life' (2000) and 'Gandhi’s Prisoner? The Life of Gandhi’s Son, Manilal' (2004), received commendations, book awards and national and international recognition. My latest book,𝘎𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘩𝘪’𝘴 𝘈𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘓𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘤𝘺: 𝘗𝘩𝘰𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘹 𝘚𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 1904 𝘵𝘰 2024. 𝘈 𝘏𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘓𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴, published by UWC Press in association with African Sun Media is over 660 pages in length. This has been an exceptional experience with the staff of African Sun Media. The final product from editing, cover design, font size, choice of paper, design layout, illustrations and photographic reproduction is beyond my expectations. The design team must be one of the best in the country. It has been one of my best experiences with a publisher." #Scholar #Research #Gandhi #Legacy #Phoenix #Author #UmaMesthrie #UWCPress #AfricanSunMedia #ASM #Review #PeerReview #Books #Published #Academia

𝗖𝗢𝗣𝗬𝗥𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧 𝗧𝗔𝗟𝗞 Copyright refers to the legal rights held by the creators of intellectual property, usually for a designated period. These rights help the creator to control the reproduction, distribution, performance, filming, or recording of their literary, artistic, or musical creations. In the realm of publishing, copyright plays a pivotal role, as publishers acquire these rights to publish a book within specific markets. As part of a publishing agreement with an author, publishers would procure the right to unleash a literary masterpiece onto the world while safeguarding the creator's interests and unlocking opportunities for dissemination. From safeguarding against breaches of copyright, to facilitating the lawful distribution of creative works, copyright forms the cornerstone of intellectual property protection. Swipe to see an example of one of our imprint (copyright) pages. In this case, there was no single author but a group of volume editors. As the creators, they are the copyright holders of the content of this original compilation of work. As the publisher, African Sun Media holds the copyright to that particular form in which the book was published. 𝗔 𝗟𝗘𝗚𝗔𝗖𝗬 𝗧𝗢 𝗖𝗘𝗟𝗘𝗕𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗘 Today, we honour the late great Archbishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu, recipient of the Templeton Prize (2013), Presidential Medal of Freedom (2009), and a Nobel Prize (1984), on what would have been his 93rd birthday, by spotlighting one of our most popular eBook titles, 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘖𝘯𝘦 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨: 𝘑𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘛𝘶𝘵𝘶. Acknowledged by Archbishop Tutu himself as “riveting”, 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘖𝘯𝘦 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 plunges the reader into the heroic role of the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu as head of the South African Council of Churches in the overthrow of apartheid. It is essentially Tutu’s story, told by his right-hand man, who relates a gripping, easy-to-read insider’s account of the significant role the South African churches played under Tutu in bringing democracy to South Africa. In 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘖𝘯𝘦 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨, the author, Dan Vaughan recounts incident by incident how, as the SACC with Tutu at the helm, courageously and relentlessly confronted the apartheid government. Tutu’s courage and implacable resistance to injustice were soon to earn him the Nobel Peace Prize. The inside story around this is also told in detail. Vaughan remembers their many encounters on their later travels to Haiti, Colombia, the USA, Northern Ireland, and the Sudan, amongst others, as Tutu crisscrossed the globe in the earlier years of this century with his message of peace. The writer blends his up-close account of Tutu with his own story of discovery – from indifference to his country’s racism, to seeing his faith dramatically transform as he journeyed the long road with Tutu. All told, a gripping read. Get the eBook: https://lnkd.in/dgTa_mNT For a print copy, contact Maylene at orders@africansunmedia.
