"Every child should own a hundred books by the age of five." Book Dash is a African social impact publisher.

About us

"Every child should own a hundred books by the age of five. Book Dash gathers creative volunteers to create new African storybooks that anyone can freely read, print, translate and distribute. Then we work with partners to give those books to preschool children to own." Owning books improves early learning opportunities, responsive caregiving and builds a child’s long term social and academic prospects. 'Early years book ownership' is a proven approach to laying foundations for literacy and thus growing human potential. Using new models of publishing and distribution, Book Dash increases the number of books in preschool children’s hands and homes. Book Dash focuses our work on two key objectives to increase the books in children's hands and homes: 1. Creation and 2. Distribution. We establish systems and partnerships for wide-scale impact. Exploring the Impact of a Collaborative, Multi-Pronged Early Literacy Intervention on 4 and 5-Year-Olds Join us for an insightful webinar presented by the Yizani Sifunde Consortium, featuring Book Dash WordworksSA, and The Nal'ibali Trust. This session will delve into the design, implementation, and impact of the Yizani Sifunde early literacy project, an innovative multi-partner approach aimed at enhancing early literacy outcomes in under-resourced ECD centers in the Eastern Cape. The webinar will explore findings from an external evaluation of child outcomes, highlighting significant literacy, fine motor skills, executive functioning, and numeracy improvements. The discussion will cover:  Project Design:  A unique, five-year collaboration involving quality resources, structured training, and ongoing support, reaching over 3,000 children and 126 ECD practitioners.  Impact: Evidence of substantial developmental gains for 4- and 5-year-olds, including a near-doubling of the percentage of children on track in literacy and language skills, and up to 13 months of additional learning for children at greatest risk.  Lessons Learned: Insights into the collaborative model's effectiveness, outcomes sustainability, and abundant book access's role in promoting reading at home.    Whether you're an educator, policymaker, or advocate for early childhood development, this session will provide valuable takeaways on how multi-pronged interventions can make a lasting difference. Date: Tuesday, 22 October  Time: 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM  Location: Online  Please RSVP via the link to join this session https://bit.ly/3YjdJGz We look forward to an engaging discussion with you!

Happy International Translation Day! We know that it's really good for children to read books in the language that they are most familiar with. That's why we are continuously expanding our Book Dash library by adding translations of our books in 11 official South African languages. Today we celebrate our amazing team of skilled translators who work their home language magic on the original stories to create authentic versions of the story for children around the country, in all communities. And remember that anyone can translate any of the Book Dash books into your own language!
