A little over a year and a half ago I had this nagging feeling that I needed to truly make an impact in my sector over and above what I was doing from a power generation perspective. The biggest concern I have always had about the just energy transition is the lack of representation and inclusion where it matters. As the world accelerates to greener energy sources my biggest concerns have always been : What happens to labour as we transition? Are we doing enough to reskill the existing employees operating in hydrocarbon sectors? What are we really doing to empower the communities in which we operate especially with the rising youth unemployment? It is against this backdrop I decided to start the DLO Skills Initiative a social enterprise aimed at providing practical skills required by the renewable energy sector. DLO Energy Resources Group (Pty) Ltd along with our partners Longyuan South Africa Renewables (Pty) Ltd recently sponsored 100 unemployed youth and through the DLO Skills Initiative and these leaners were provided with 3 months training in solar panel maintenance and cleaning. Last week I joined them on their site visit and for their graduation ceremony. I can honestly say without a doubt this is my favorite part about what we do at DLO…creating impact. I am so so proud of the students that stuck it out and graduated last week. I am equally proud of my DLO team who worked tirelessly to make this programme a success. We look forward to working with other IPPS on creating impact and real value to the communities in which we operate. ED/SED should not just be a compliance tick box exercise, we have a real opportunity to leave these communities better than we found them. During the Concordia Summit two weeks ago I had the honour of having an honest and frank discussion with the President-Designate of COP 29 H.E Mukhtar Babayev as well as the Prime Minister of Grenada H.E Dickon Mitchell. At the centre of our discussion was the issue of funding the just energy transition especially for the global south . Many pledges have been made at the various COP gatherings but very little of that has translated to the pledged funding trickling down to the countries that need it the most. I was left hopeful by the commitment undertaken by H.E Mukhtar Babayev that funding would be the central theme at COP29, however in my discussions with him I emphasized not only for the commitment of funding but for the process around the accessibility of those funds to be less onerous. Rapelang’s story is simply inspirational she was able to convert her window cleaning business to a solar cleaning and maintenance company which now services a number of renewable energy projects in South Africa. She was able to do this through upskilling herself and attending our workshops and training. Join the DLO Skills Initiative as they host an interactive workshop on how to access opportunities in the renewable energy sector. The workshop will give an overview of the renewable energy sector: 1. how to get started- in particular we will list the various service businesses requires in a renewable energy plant and tell you how to apply for tenders. 2. how to access funding- we will run through a list of the funders and what affordable funding products they have. The Workshop is led by entrepreneurs that have managed to build and scale successful startups in the renewable energy sector so the information provided is understandable, relatable and practical.
