The data shows that 81% of Generation Z (average age 21) can speak and understand English, yet for Baby Boomers (average age 66), fewer than half can. I was asked if this internet, media and business influence was the beginning of the end for most of our 11 official languages. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the use of French was universal across Europe.
On the 24th of September South Africans celebrated their heritage. Among the celebrations were tributes to our diverse mother tongues. Language has played a critical role in South Africa.
