We had a great time at the Alphawave Social Golf Day yesterday!🏌️♀️ From long drives to sinking putts, it was a day full of fun, laughter, and some friendly competition of course. 📹 Watch the assembly of the first SKA-Mid dish on site in South Africa! Last week's "big lift" of the 24-tonne main reflector marked another milestone on our construction journey. What happens next? SKA-Mid Site Construction Director Tracy Cheetham tells us that more components will be installed on the dish in the coming weeks, starting with the feed indexer. “As a team we are now totally focused on the next stage of activities because we have already got two more dish structures on site, ready for assembly," she says. EMSS Antennas exposed me to the outside world, and I got to experience and appreciate the deference inherent in professional practice and the theory that was imparted to me at Stellenbosch University. This experience did not only improve my academic knowledge. It equipped me with the necessary non-technical skills on how to maintain good human relationships and allowed me to practice all professional ethics in the engineering field. I got the opportunity to work closely with talented engineers who inspired me to advance confidently into my career. NEWS: The first SKA-Mid dish is taking shape in South Africa 🎉🇿🇦! Last Thursday we carried out the "big lift" of the 15-m-wide main reflector, alongside our partners SARAO - South African Radio Astronomy Observatory, and China's CETC54 🇨🇳. This is one of four dishes that will mark the first stage of SKA-Mid delivery. “There’s a lot of work ahead of us, but for everyone involved, this is a special moment that represents years of toil by people all over the world, so I want to thank them for their dedication in getting us here,” said SKA-Mid Senior Project Manager Ben Lewis. Oxford University senior researcher in radioastronomy Ian Heywood praised MeerKAT in a statement. “The MeerKAT telescope is the best of its kind in the world. We have managed to identify these giant radio galaxies for the first time because of its unprecedented sensitivity to faint and diffuse radio light. This has made it possible to detect features that haven’t been seen before.” By building state-of-the-art receivers, EMSS Antennas played a crucial role in achieving the telescopes’ sensitivity, which exceeded the specified sensitivity twofold, leading to a number of discoveries. These projects are complex, high-stakes engineering challenges that also reinforced our commitment to enabling the best in the tech industry to achieve remarkable successes.
