We defend the right to everyone to free, quality public education.

About us

The Global Campaign for Education (GCE) is a civil society movement that promotes and defends education as a basic human right. We campaign and advocate at the international, regional and national level to put pressure on governments and the international community to deliver the right of everyone to a free, quality, public education. The GCE movement was founded in 1999, in the build-up to the World Education Forum in Dakar, to provide a platform to unify and coordinate civil society voices in relation to the global education agenda. Since then, the movement GCE has grown significantly, in particular through the expansion and consolidation of national civil society coalitions. Some important progress has been made, including 40 million more children in school. However, far more still needs to be done to realise the right to quality education for all. Today, the GCE represent over 100 national and regional education coalitions and international organisations. Our membership is comprised of a huge variety of national, regional and international civil society organisations, teachers’ organisations, parents’ associations, women’s group, disabled people’s organisation, youth and student groups, academic or research institutions and child rights campaigners. Our national coalitions encompass many thousands of civil society organisations and represent millions of individual across the world.

  • GCE organised the '𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚: 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬’ 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠' 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 in Benoni, South Africa in the last quarter of 2024. Click the following link for the full report of the workshop - https://bit.ly/3CiIPpt This important event brought together representatives from national education coalitions across Africa, marking a crucial step in our mission to transform education on the continent. Held during the African Union's Year of Education, this workshop offered a valuable opportunity for deep reflection and strategic planning. We believe that strong civil society organisations in many African nations are key to ensuring effective oversight of education policy implementation. To drive meaningful change, we need 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 and 𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 to encourage governments to adopt transformative education programmes. Our discussions highlighted that successful education initiatives depend on 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, 𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐜𝐲, and 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 tailored to local contexts. The diverse approaches across the region underline the importance of adapting strategies while staying focused on our common goals.

In October, we were very honoured to host the 2024 face-to-face meeting of the European and North American Campaign for Education (ENACE) in Dublin. This meeting brought together 15 ENACE coalitions in person and virtually from Europe and North America, including from as far as Armenia and the US. 🌍📚   We are incredibly proud to have been part of this meeting which strengthened ENACE's collective identity and saw ENACE make commitments for new initiatives to strengthen our cooperation and to advocate for #QualityEducation for all. Through a series of workshops and inspiring discussions, the coalitions agreed on a workplan and roadmap for 2025 focused on capacity strengthening, campaigning, and advocacy.     In workshops with the Global Campaign for Education (GCE), the Global Partnership for Education, and Education Cannot Wait (ECW), ENACE was also able to strengthen the foundations for future cooperation and partnerships.     We look back to an inspiring week of energy and action. Incredibly thankful for the opportunity to see so many in person and more online! And excited for the next steps! 🌟   A huge thanks to all participants: Klaus-Peter Hammer, Beatrice SchulterMathias SlettholmNicolas LangerCrispin WilliamsMarije van BredaEmma WagnerGevork ManoukianHannah FrischGiulia McPherson, Ina Woods, Irina Popusoi, Mariluz AparicioNadine Bernasconi, Ponke Danker, Emanuele Russo, Ph.D.Léa Rambaud, Altin Hazizaj.     And a huge thank you for the contributions from GCE, GPE, and ECW by Refat Sabbah, Chris Weavers, Yona Nestel, Susan Nicolai, and Tyler Arnot.     We are also incredibly thankful for LinkedIn for hosting us at their Community Space in their Dublin Office – a great space and fantastic way to support non-for-profits and education!
