Enriching lives of local communities Grindrod recently inaugurated a learning centre for children in the Sibacusse community in the Marracuene district of Maputo. This initiative, led by the 85 members of the Sibacusse Women's Association, aims to provide educational and training opportunities, health consultations, and community engagement events and meetings. It is anticipated to benefit approximately 3 500 to 4 000 people. Ismênia Ferreira, HR Manager at Grindrod, expressed, "We believe that by initiating this programme, we are truly making a difference in the community and neighbouring areas. The high turnout of 180 children, compared to the expected 50, underscores the necessity for a welcoming, healthy, and secure place for our children. We are committed to supporting and encouraging these children who represent our future." Grindrod recently hosted a career day for seven promising graduates who are being sponsored to further their studies. Four students are being sponsored through the @CyrilRamaphosaEducationTrust(cret) and three students independently. Representatives from various departments, including Finance, Internal Audit, IT Security, the Commercial Team, Legal, and Insurance Treasury, shared their unique career journeys. Each speaker provided valuable advice, illustrating how their roles contribute to the company's success. The graduates were encouraged to ask questions, leading to enriching discussions that broadened their understanding of the diverse career paths within Grindrod. The highlight of the day was the inspiring talk given by the CEO, Mr. Xolani Mbambo, who captivated the audience with his humble beginnings and incredible career journey. From his first job as a gardener to qualifying as a Chartered Accountant and working for a multinational mining company before joining Grindrod, Xolani shared his wisdom with heartfelt sincerity. He emphasized the importance of defining one's purpose in life, accepting constructive criticism, and the fact that "hard work trumps talent when talent is lazy." He urged the graduates to strive for excellence, stating, "Be good enough to be recognized. And never forget to put your faith in a higher power." Commenting on the day, Xolani said, "It was a pleasure meeting the group of enthusiastic graduates, and I look forward to watching them grow and develop in their careers.
