It’s the start of a new year… That magical time when we convince ourselves that flipping a calendar page will somehow transform us into better, fitter, more productive versions of ourselves. ‘New year, new me,’ we say. But let’s be honest: January comes and goes, and we’re still the same. Same habits, same thoughts, same behaviour, same coffee order. The only thing that might feel different is that post-holiday glow (which generally only lasts as long as your first coffee back at the office). Many organisations step into the new year with grand declarations about culture transformation but here’s the hard truth: A new year doesn’t magically mean a new culture. Culture doesn’t change because the diary says so. Culture changes when behaviour changes, intentionally and consistently. Without these two driving forces, nothing actually shifts. If you want to build an engaged, positive culture, you need to dig deeper than just setting goals. You need to ask tough questions: What behaviour needs to change? What’s holding us back? What’s that 1 thing that just irks us the most?  What do we want to celebrate at the end of the year? The challenge for culture leaders is to ask the right questions without opening a full-blown complaint session. There’s a balance between encouraging people to share what’s holding them back while keeping the focus on solutions, not gripes. At King Price, we’re not relying on a new year inscription to drive culture change. We’re getting even more hands-on, making deliberate moves to shift behaviour and improve how we work, lead, and collaborate. We’re continuing with our belief and behaviour sessions, focusing on what we need to do in order to align more closely with our values. We’ve launched a programme to empower our leaders and equip them with the tools to drive meaningful change. And, we’re not just thinking big. We’re also thinking about the everyday things that affect everyone in our kingdom. In psychological safety discussions, there’s an exercise called ‘stinky fish’, which is about facing the issues that everyone knows exist but which nobody wants to talk about. These are the real culture blockers; the things that cause frustration, friction, and disengagement. But, we’re not put off by the smell. Are you?
