Discovery employees participate in CANSA Shavathon Recently Discovery’s offices across regions were transformed into a sea of colour as we came together for the CANSA Shavathon, an important partnership between CANSA The Cancer Association of South Africa and the Discovery Employee Volunteer Programme. This annual event, once again, provided our teams with the opportunity to shave, spray, or donate, and spread colourful kindness while raising funds for cancer research, awareness and care. Our teams across the country came out in full force to show their support. With prizes up for grabs and valuable insights, the day was filled with enthusiasm, generosity, and a sense of shared purpose. Discovery remains steadfast in supporting CANSA and other partner organisations as we continue to demonstrate our value as a Force for Social Good. Thank you to everyone who participated — your time and donations are making a real difference. #CANSAShavathon #DiscoveryForGood #CancerAwareness

World Kidney Day spotlight: Dr Darlene Boakye is advancing research on pregnancy and chronic kidney disease On this World Kidney Day, we celebrate the remarkable contributions of Dr Darlene Boakye, a dedicated registrar at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. With the support of the Discovery Foundation Sub-Specialist Award for 2023/2024, Dr Boakye is pioneering crucial research on maternal and fetal outcomes in patients with chronic kidney disease. This area of study is especially vital in South Africa, where nephrologists are in short supply. A pivotal moment in Dr Boakye’s career occurred when her brother, working in Ghana, fell critically ill with kidney failure. She travelled to Ghana to advocate for his care, using her internal medicine knowledge and early nephrology expertise to ensure he received life-saving dialysis. Reflecting on her journey, Dr Boakye says, 'My brother getting ill was essentially a pathway for me to end up doing nephrology.' The success of her efforts, which led to her brother’s recovery, solidified her decision to specialize in nephrology and dedicate her skills to helping others facing similar kidney-related challenges. Dr Boakye’s passion for improving healthcare outcomes for pregnant women with kidney disease is evident: 'I want to look at what happens to the mother, and what happens to the fetus or the baby, and then be able to bring some awareness.' World Kidney Day, observed annually on the second Thursday of March, raises awareness about the crucial role our kidneys play in overall health. This year's theme, 'Are Your Kidneys OK? – Detect early, protect kidney health,' underscores the importance of early detection and intervention, especially for those at higher risk, such as individuals with diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Dr Boakye is determined to leverage her expertise and research to improve healthcare outcomes for patients with kidney disease, particularly among pregnant women. 'If you are aware that you have kidney failure, we encourage you to seek help sooner,' she says. #WorldKidneyDay #Nephrology #DiscoveryFoundation

This World Obesity Day, observed on March 4th, we reflect on the work being done to address obesity and its associated health risks. As a recipient of the Discovery Foundation Rural Individual Award for 2023/2024, Dr. Kgothatso Mothapo’s research focuses on the prevalence of type 2 diabetes and its associated risk factors in rural Madombidhza Village, Vhembe District. Her work has brought attention to the health challenges faced by underserved communities. Through her efforts, she advocates for better access to nutritious food, improved healthcare infrastructure, and educational initiatives to combat obesity and its related diseases. “Unfortunately, a lot of studies about diabetes prevalence are not accurate because they’re not conducted at a community level,” notes Dr. Mothapo, a family medicine registrar at Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital in Limpopo. “If we’re going to talk about prevalence in this community, you actually need to go house-to-house.” A champion for improved rural healthcare Dr. Mothapo explains, “If we detect diabetes early, we won’t even have to get to that complicated referral process of us sending patients to larger hospitals. Early detection and treatment can prevent complications before they arise.” Her dedication aligns perfectly with this year's World Obesity Day theme: “Changing Systems, Healthier Lives.” By focusing on systemic change and empowering communities with the tools and knowledge they need to live healthier lives, healthcare professionals like Dr. Mothapo are making meaningful progress in addressing the global obesity epidemic and its impact on public health. #WorldObesityDay #DiabetesAwareness #DiscoveryFoundation

Healthy Lifestyle Awareness month: How the Discovery Foundation is supporting Dr Ntuthuko Ntanzi’s medical journey As we observe Healthy Lifestyle Awareness month, we reflect on the importance of equitable healthcare access — a key focus of this year’s theme: “Equity in Health: Access, Awareness, and Action.” A shining example of this commitment is Dr Ntuthuko Ntanzi, a general surgeon from KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and a recipient of the 2022/2023 Discovery Foundation Rural Institutional Award. Born in King Edward Hospital, Durban, where he now works, Dr Ntanzi’s journey is one of dedication and resilience. Despite initially considering law at the University of Cape Town, he chose medicine, a decision that continues to impact countless lives. “As a medical doctor, we make an impact in people’s lives every day, and it is a very fulfilling career. It is very rewarding when you see patients do better, and you see the outcomes of your medical interventions,” says Dr Ntanzi. With a passion for gastroenterology and surgical gastroenterology, Dr Ntanzi has transitioned to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital for his fellowship training. His goal is to overcome challenges in specialist care in KZN, where demand far exceeds supply. “There is a lot of interest amongst general surgeons to sub-specialise into Hepatobiliary (HPB) and upper GI, but I think the opportunities for training are just not there. This is why I am grateful for the opportunity that Discovery has given me to sub-specialise,” he says. A recipient of the 2022/2023 Discovery Foundation Rural Institutional Award, Dr Ntanzi is making strides in gastroenterology and surgical gastroenterology, fields in which South Africa urgently needs more specialists. Building a healthier South Africa Dr Ntanzi believes in centralised referral systems as a solution: “If patients are coming from a rural setting and are referred appropriately and timeously, they can access sub-speciality care in central areas without delays,” says Dr Ntanzi. As we reflect on Healthy Lifestyle Awareness Month, we celebrate not just individual health choices but also the people driving systemic change in healthcare. Dr Ntanzi’s story is a testament to perseverance, passion, and service — and a reminder that healthcare equity is key to a healthier nation. #HealthyLifestyleAwarenessDay #DiscoveryFoundation

Reproductive health month spotlight: Dr Sibusiso Mbili’s research on cardiac disease during pregnancy We honour the work of Dr Sibusiso Mbili, a medical registrar in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital. Dr Mbili is a recipient of the Discovery Rural Individual Award for 2023/2024 currently pursuing his research into cardiac diseases in pregnancy — a leading cause of maternal and prenatal mortality in the Eastern Cape. Dr Mbili’s journey is one of resilience and triumph. Orphaned at the age of seven, he grew up moving between relatives and faced the challenge of navigating life without immediate family support. Despite these hardships, he excelled academically. A significant turning point came when he enrolled at Christian High School in Durban, supported by a financial gift left by his late mother. Through hard work, determination, and mentorship from his high school principal, he pursued medicine, overcoming countless challenges to study at Walter Sisulu University. His research addresses a critical issue: the prevalence of cardiac diseases during pregnancy in the Eastern Cape. According to the Saving Mothers Report 2021 by the National Department of Health, cardiac disease is the second most common cause of indirect maternal deaths in South Africa, accounting for 12.6% of such deaths. “Pregnancy can significantly burden the cardiovascular system, leading to complications that endanger both the mother and the baby,” explains Dr Mbili. His research highlights the prevalence of rheumatic heart disease, a preventable condition, in 8-9% of pregnant patients at his hospital. By developing targeted interventions, Dr Mbili is not only addressing a critical health issue but also paving the way for better maternal health outcomes. South Africa faces significant challenges in maternal health, but with leaders like Dr Mbili, progress is not just possible — it’s inevitable. Let us celebrate his work and reflect on the importance of ensuring safe pregnancies for all. #MaternalHealth #SouthAfrica
