Dr. Wayne Riback GM: MEDSCHEME HOLDINGS Health Professionals Strategic Unit was excited to return to his alma mater, the University of the Witwatersrand and join the ‘Curious Cases’ event sponsored by Fedhealth Medical Scheme and organised by the Wits Students' Physician Society. The event gathered physicians from different specialties to showcase their most unique and interesting cases that often go beyond the medical textbooks. Many thanks to the Fedhealth Medical Scheme team and University of the Witwatersrand for the opportunity to discuss how out-of-the-normal or beyond-the-textbook medical cases are handled from a medical aid perspective. This was a valuable discussion for our future doctors and we wish them well in their continuing studies!

A proud and winning partnership with Quro Medical indeed! Thanks to all who continue to contribute to the success of this program.
On this day, 03 September 2024, we proudly commemorate a groundbreaking milestone, Medscheme, an AfroCentric Group company, admitted its first patient into the "Hospital at Home" programme. Since its launch in September 2020, this revolutionary service has transformed the delivery of acute care in South Africa. Today, we celebrate not only the success of this initiative but also the continued well-being of our very first patient, who remains a testament to the programme’s enduring impact. What is "Hospital at Home"? Medscheme’s "Hospital at Home" programme offers hospital-level care within the comfort and safety of your own home. More than just a convenient alternative, this innovative approach promotes faster recovery, reduces the risk of infections and provides cost-effective care—all while maintaining the high-quality treatment standards synonymous with traditional hospital settings. Why Choose "Hospital at Home"? · Unparalleled Growth: Since its inception in 2020, the programme has experienced extraordinary growth, with admissions increasing by an astounding 400% year-on-year. What began with single-digit admissions per month has now expanded to triple-digit figures, reflecting the growing trust and demand for home-based care across South Africa. · Comprehensive Care for a Broad Range of Clinical Conditions: Our "Hospital at Home" programme is equipped to manage a wide spectrum of clinical conditions, from pneumonia and urinary tract infections to post-surgical care and chronic conditions like heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This extensive range ensures that more patients can benefit from receiving high-quality care in a familiar and comfortable environment. · Exceptional Member Satisfaction: Member satisfaction scores have soared, underscoring the programme's success in meeting and exceeding patient needs and expectations. More South Africans are discovering the profound benefits of receiving care in a setting that fosters comfort and familiarity. A Winning Partnership with Quro Medical This success story would not have been possible without our strategic partnership with Quro Medical—Africa’s first and leading hospital-at-home provider. Together, we have pioneered a new era of healthcare delivery, setting new standards for patient care across the continent. As we celebrate this milestone, we invite you to learn more about how Medscheme’s "Hospital at Home" is reshaping healthcare in South Africa, offering a model of care that is truly patient-centered and future-focused. #HospitalAtHome #HealthcareReimagined #AnniversaryMilestone #AfroCentricGroup #Medscheme

Many thanks to Jenna Bailey and Novartis Oncology for hosting an important knowledge session over the weekend with Haematology Nursing Sisters, Pharmacists and Case Managers from practices around the country. Our Functional Head of Oncology, Dr Jenni Noble appreciated the opportunity to add to the conversation in her presentation on Sustainable Oncology Healthcare Funding. Balancing the needs of the patient with the costs of treatment is critical in the face of rapid innovation and significantly rising costs in oncology medicine. The discussion that followed highlighted how medical schemes and practices can work together to ensure that “risk/benefit pools” are sustainably managed whilst giving patients the best possible access to care.

A very important accolade from ASAIPA - THE ALLIANCE OF SOUTH AFRICAN IPA'S was recently bestowed on Dr Eduard Delport from the Medscheme Health Professionals Strategic Unit (HPSU). Dr. Wayne Riback (GM HPSU) said, "On a personal note, I would like to thank Ed and acknowledge him on behalf of myself, HPSU and Medscheme as a whole for this exceptional achievement." Our hearty congratulations to you Dr Ed!
We are extremely proud of Dr Eduard Delport who was awarded the 2024 HCP Excellence Award by ASAIPA (Alliance of the South African Independent Practitioners Association) at the National Medical Awards. The National Medical Awards (NMA) serve as a platform to celebrate individuals dedicated to providing exceptional service in their professional fields. This well-deserved recognition is an honour bestowed upon Dr Ed for unwavering commitment and outstanding contributions to the advancement of the medical industry and acknowledges exemplary leadership qualities that have led to impactful solutions within South Africa's healthcare system, benefiting both patients and colleagues alike. Dr Eduard Delport is an enthusiastic healthcare expert /professional whose role within the Health Professionals Strategic Unit at Medscheme includes facilitating improved collaboration between Healthcare Funders, Healthcare Professional Leadership bodies and, most importantly, GPs at the frontline of care. Dr Delport believes Primary Care and Family Practice to be a most important, but often overlooked, cog in our private healthcare system. The award not only recognises Dr Delport and his knowledge, expertise, passion and commitment in driving Managed Care in the Family Practitioner space, but also demonstrates the respect and admiration that his peers in the clinical field have for him. In Dr Ed’s own words, “It’s great to have the healthcare professional societies recognition in what we are trying to develop as Medscheme from a GP and Primary Care Delivery point of view. And, in turn, to be open to their scrutiny and often ‘robust guidance’ as to how best to serve our scheme members and patients at the ‘coalface of healthcare’.” #Medscheme #AfroCentricGroup #HealthierTogether

The Sanlam Group Professional Secretaries Forum (SPSF) annually recognises Group Personal Assistants through a competition launched in 2008. The competition aims to raise the standard of efficiency and effectiveness and give recognition to the very important role they fulfil throughout the Group. The process starts with being nominated and nominees are then put through robust judging and interviews to select the winners . We are thrilled that Hassina Muslim from Medscheme was awarded top honors as Group Senior Personal Assistant of the Year for 2024. During her time with the company, Hassina has learned that growth is infinite, and that if we’re challenged every day, we can grow and flourish. “In my professional world, I believe understanding organisational culture is important to ensure cohesion in reaching our goals. It is key to be cognisant of all stakeholder requirements and to foster and maintain good relationships so that we succeed in all our endeavors.” she explains. Congratulations Hassina and keep on shining!

Yesterday, our staff took time to pack and dispatch grocery hampers to those in need as our contribution to honour the legacy of President Nelson Mandela and celebrate Mandela Day. As Mr Mandela once said, "It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the lives we lead". A good reminder for every day behaviour, not just 67mins once a year.

Medscheme offers medical schemes a selection of disease management services that support members in managing their chronic conditions. These services aim to target key challenges in disease management and facilitate the appropriate utilisation of services to improve health outcomes and quality of life. Medscheme uses an outcomes-based approach that ensures that the key indicators of health drive disease management interventions. By managing members holistically and integrating the various healthcare role-players, schemes may be assured that members will receive personalised, effective care.
Subsidiary Spotlight: Medscheme Part 2 In our previous spotlight, we introduced Medscheme, the largest subsidiary of the Afrocentric Group. Today, we delve deeper into Medscheme's Integrated Chronic Care (ICC) program, a key component of their comprehensive integrated care offerings. Integrated Chronic Care (ICC) According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), 17 million people globally die from non-communicable diseases before age 70 each year. South Africa ranks among the top 32 countries with high rates of such deaths. Medscheme’s ICC program aims to address this by managing chronic diseases more effectively, thereby reducing healthcare costs and saving lives. 5 Key Behaviours Driving 8 Chronic Conditions Medscheme focuses on improving five key behaviours: · Tobacco use · Physical inactivity · Harmful use of alcohol · Unhealthy diets · Environmental factors (i.e stress, sleep quality, socio-economic factors) These behaviours all increase the risk of eight prevalent chronic conditions, which include cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes, kidney disease, mental health conditions, back pain and HIV. These conditions account for 60-70% of scheme healthcare expenditure. Comprehensive Care Programs Medscheme’s condition-specific care programmes focus on care coordination between members, healthcare providers and partners such as hospitals and laboratories. This integrated, holistic and member-centric approach ensures personalised and effective care. Supporting Integrated Chronic Care Medscheme’s ICC program is supported by: · Strong clinical policymakers · Advanced analytical health models · Data-driven insights · Top-quality hospital and provider networks Care Through All Stages of Life Medscheme considers individual needs across the entire care continuum: · Lifestyle wellness · Preventative care · Chronic onset · Acute events & disease complications · End-of-life care Medscheme’s commitment to chronic care exemplifies its leadership in the healthcare industry. This integrated and an outcomes-based approach ensures that key indicators of health drive disease management interventions. Medscheme's risk stratification and predictive modelling have proven effective in identifying high-risk populations and supporting health risk management initiatives. Our approach is underpinned by data-driven decision-making and clinical best practice, offering innovative solutions that improve patient outcomes and drive sustainable healthcare.
