Blog | Charting new horizons for Mertech Marine Over 20 years ago, Van Wyk van Niekerk attended a public auction at the Cape Town harbour—a regular outing for a farmer always on the lookout for odds and ends to enhance his operations. This time, he discovered some unusual material: redundant telecommunications cables retrieved from the ocean floor. As he began stripping the cables and uncovering valuable copper and steel, a thought struck him: What if he could acquire more of this resource and build a business to unlock its full potential? This idea led to the creation of Mertech Marine, a pioneer in the responsible recovery and recycling of out-of-service telecommunications cables from beneath the seabed. To date, Mertech Marine has processed over 105,000 kilometres of undersea cable and cleared tens of thousands of tons from depots around the globe.
