About us

Mukuru is one of the largest money transfer providers in Africa and a leading Next Gen Financial Services Platform that offers affordable and reliable financial services to the emerging consumer. The foundation of our business was built by providing the continent’s migrant diaspora with safe, convenient international money transfers. From this base we have grown a wide range of products and services that take their cue from our customers’ needs and aspirations for greater financial security and a better life. To this end, we continue to build a highly robust and resilient physical and digital financial payments infrastructure across Africa that unlocks new value-added services for our loyal customers. This includes cash transfers, Mukuru Funeral Cover, and the Mukuru Card. As a fintech provider, Mukuru has underpinned its successful customer engagement strategy with the ability to ‘speak the language’ of its users and gain a grassroots understanding of the unique pain points that customers face in each market. Our engagement platforms include WhatsApp, free USSD, the Mukuru App, and the website. Customers are always able to speak to Mukuru about any challenges or difficulties with the platform, whether it’s a Mukuru agent in a physical booth, at a branch, over the telephone, or via a virtual live chat function in a language of the customer’s choosing, and often in their mother tongue. Take a walk through our Contact Centre at any time, and you’ll hear conversations in 15 languages – our very own united nations of Africa and Asia.

Mukuru and SZCC: Bridging Cultures and Bringing Joy While Making a Difference in the Dragon Year. 2024 marks the Dragon Year in Chinese culture which represents strength, courage, and prosperity. In line with this special commemorative year, which is believed to bring good fortune and success, Mukuru, together with the Shenzheng Chamber of Commerce (SZCC), hosted a charity event at Edward Primary School, in Cape Town, using the funds raised from the Dragon Year Global Charity Singing Relay Race. Bridging Cultures and Bringing Joy. The singing relay race is a distinct philanthropic activity, which centres around making a difference while tapping into the joy of bridging cultures. With singing as a cherished Chinese cultural activity, participants were encouraged to donate to be able to participate in the race. This added a sense of unity and celebration to the race resulting in contributions reaching an impressive total of R100,000.00 to support local causes. To donate these funds, Mukuru and SZCC chose Edward Primary School which had the urgent need of support and also organised an event attended by the former Mayor of Cape Town, representatives from the Chinese Consulate General in Cape Town, SZCC members, and Mukuru's African and Asian sales teams. The event, dedicated to putting smiles on the pupils faces, was filled with cheerful speeches, a diverse cultural singing talent show, and the donation of essential items to the school, which supports 480 underprivileged pupils. Donated items included school bags, full loaves of bread, Mukuru-branded water bottles, pens and drinking water. Furthermore, a cheque of R100,000.00 was also handed over to the school to cover other school needs. Yu Huang (MBA), Mukuru’s Senior Sales Manager for Market Expansion, shared the importance of this initiative: "At Mukuru, we believe in the power of partnerships to drive meaningful change. We cannot do it alone and this is why we choose to take part in initiatives such as Dragon Year Global Charity Singing Relay Race, where we show how enjoyable and fun giving back can be. Thank you to everyone who made this event a success and to those who participated in the race and donated. Your generosity has made this event a success. We are happy to see that the donations will greatly benefit the pupils, and we are proud to have brought smiles to their faces while making a difference."

Mukuru is proud to sponsor the Fintech Association of Botswana's Power Breakfast, taking place tomorrow, 15th August, at the Royal Aria Hotel. Themed "Financial Inclusion," this event is a key gathering of industry leaders, academics, and government officials, all focused on overcoming challenges and seizing opportunities to ensure financial services are accessible to everyone. Nikki Kettles, our Executive of Licences and Payments Regulations, will be a speaker and lead of a round table on "Regulatory Barriers," where she will join other industry experts in crafting solutions to address the regulatory hurdles that limit access to financial services for low-income populations. “Our sponsorship and participation in this Power Breakfast align strongly with our mission to provide financial service products to the un and under banked in support of financial inclusion. Partnering with an organisation that enables us to not just join the conversation but actively craft solutions which will bring change is a privilege. I’m honoured to bring Mukuru’s vision to the table alongside leaders who are committed to addressing the most pressing issues in the financial sector,” says Kettles.

Well done to our Chief Information Officer SANDRA RHEEDER for having an insightful discussion during an eNCA interview with Gareth Edwards on empowering women in finance. Sandy, who joined Mukuru 7 years ago shared, “Mukuru’s fundamental agenda is about financial inclusion. A significant portion of the market, particularly women, has been excluded, and our journey naturally addresses that. This really excites me because I love building technology that genuinely helps women in need”. #Mukuru #WomenInFinance #WomensMonth #FinancialInclusion #WomenInFintech
