According to the World Stroke Organization, of the 12 million people who suffer a stroke worldwide per year, about 6.5 million of them will die. While 90% of strokes can be prevented, an inactive exercise routine is the leading cause of strokes across the globe. In South Africa, strokes are one of the top ten causes of disabilities. Here’s how to recognise if someone is in danger of having a stroke: F – face droop: is the person’s face sagging on one side and are they able to smile A – arm weakness: is the person’s one arm dipped lower than their other arm or can they lift both arms S – speech impairment: is the person slurring their words T – time to call emergency services It is always important to have emergency contacts at the ready, whether you at home or travelling – you never know when you might need to call in an emergency. In the latest report compiled by SweepSouth it noted that only 2% of domestic workers in South Africa have access to medical cover. Domestic workers rely heavily on state facilities to take care of their healthcare needs, and it usually takes a full workday to visit their local clinic, this often leads to a loss of an entire day’s earnings This puts domestic workers in a tight spot leading them to make a tough decision: either take a loss in income or delay treatment at a healthcare practitioner and risk a poorer health consequence. From being indebted to local spaza shops to owing loan sharks – MediClub has an effective health insurance solution to the ever-financial weight that your domestic worker carries. Homeowners can lighten the healthcare burden that their staff face by purchasing MediClub Connect for them, at the very affordable rate of R149 per employee per month. “Safe, healthy working environments can act as a protective factor for mental health.” – World Health Organization Poverty, unemployment and economic difficulty are among the many reasons why South Africans battle with mental health issues. Mental health issues such as depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder are the leading mental health conditions that South Africans struggle with. A lack of access to healthcare facilities and inadequate mental health education among South Africans who reside in impoverished and rural areas especially, tend to lead to an oversight of the warning signs of someone struggling. A valuable and essential solution to taking a step in the right direction is by creating a safe space for employees who make the wheels of industry turn. Forward-thinking companies have invested in MediClub for their staff to make access to counselling services easy, comfortable and simple. With MediClub’s 24/7 Assistance Programme, employees have access to a trauma counsellor, a credit and debt counsellor, a legal advisor and a health advisor. From only R149 per employee per month, you can help your staff improve their mental health and simultaneously expand your bottom line. #NationalHealthCareGroup #AccessibleHealthcare #AffordableHealthcare #PrimaryHealthcare #QualityHealthcare #WorldMentalHealthDay #MediClub #MentalHealthMonth

Mental health in the workplace matters A recent white paper by the Wits/Medical Research Council, Developmental Pathways for Health Research Unit, suggests that up to a quarter of South African employees may be diagnosed with depression during their employment. However, only 15% to 25% of these individuals will seek and receive help. This reluctance to seek assistance contributes to significant productivity losses, with depression-related absenteeism costing the South African economy around R19 billion annually. This #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth, take a proactive stance on mental wellbeing in the workplace. The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) reveals that just one in six employees will disclose their mental health issues to their manager. Beyond absenteeism, depression can affect cognitive function and overall workplace morale. Common cognitive symptoms of depression ❤️ Poor concentration ❤️ Easily distracted ❤️ Poor memory/forgetfulness ❤️ Indecisiveness ❤️ Slower thinking speed ❤️ Problem-solving difficulties ❤️ Struggling to find the right words to express your thoughts ❤️ Negative or distorted thinking patterns Together, we can create a supportive workplace where employees feel safe to seek the help they need. Let's make mental health a priority and work towards a healthier, more productive South Africa. What can we do? 👉 Training and awareness: Implement training programs to help identify and support employees who are struggling with mental health issues. 👉 Foster an open environment: Encourage open discussions about mental health to reduce the stigma. Promote a culture of acceptance surrounding depression and other psychiatric disorders. 👉 Provide resources: Ensure access to mental health resources and support. If an employee shares their struggle with depression, refer them to a mental healthcare professional and reassure them that it can be treated. Find ways to support their recovery, such as adjusting working hours or allowing them to work from home for a while. 👉 Lead by example: Managers and leaders should demonstrate and support healthy mental health practices.

Get behind the wellbeing of your workers “It is a proven fact that absenteeism affects the productivity, efficiency, and profitability of businesses and that it has the potential to erode the bottom line of even the best run companies. In fact, if we were to calculate the financial losses incurred within the South African economy as a result of absenteeism in the workplace, it would amount to several billion in lost revenue.” – Dr Reinder Nauta – Executive Chairman National HealthCare Group. Employers have a vested interest in keeping the country's workforce well and healthy; it makes business sense to look after your people. This Corporate Wellness Week, have you considered the impact that a small monthly investment can make on the health and wellbeing of your employees? What happens when one of your hardworking employees needs an x-ray after a fall, is at risk of developing a chronic disease, is down with flu, or something worse? Do they have to scamper to get the money together to see a healthcare provider? Do they need to wait in line at a state facility to access medical care? In today's world, essential healthcare services should not be a luxury. At National HealthCare Group, we believe that access to affordable primary healthcare is at the heart of human potential, productivity and prosperity. For this reason, we guarantee reliable access to quality primary care at an affordable rate for your people. With our tailor-made solutions, we aim to reduce absenteeism, enhance productivity and strengthen your business's bottom line by improving access to quality healthcare. This means that when your employees need prompt and effective healthcare, they can get it without breaking the bank. Stop the spread of colds and flu As flu season takes hold across South Africa, Dr Peter Makhambeni, chief clinician of the National HealthCare Group, administrators of MediClub Connect, cautions that it is worth remembering that influenza can be dangerous for some people and can easily spiral out of control if you don’t take care of yourself. While most people recover within a week without requiring medical attention, influenza is not to be underestimated as it can lead to severe illness, hospitalisation, and death, especially in older adults, infants, pregnant women, overweight individuals, and individuals with chronic medical conditions. Preventing colds and flu Looking back on the COVID-19 lockdown of 2020, it is interesting to note that South Africa had no flu season. The very practices that protected us from COVID-19, like hand sanitation, wearing masks and social distancing, also proved to be powerful allies against the spread of the flu. There is a valuable lesson in this: strict hygiene and maintaining our distance when sick can be our strongest defence against the spread of illness. By maintaining these good habits, we can help to contain infectious diseases, including colds and the flu. Tips for preventing the spread of infectious diseases 👉 Wash hands regularly. 👉 Sanitise your hands. 👉 At work, sanitise workstations. 👉 When experiencing symptoms, protect co-workers from infection by keeping safe distances and wearing face masks when interacting with colleagues. 👉 For those who can, work from home for as long as you have symptoms. The flu vaccine is one of the best ways to protect yourself from the current flu strains doing the rounds. If you get infected with influenza, your symptoms will be much milder than if you were not vaccinated. So, if you have not yet gotten the flu vaccine, do so as soon as possible, as it takes a good two weeks to build immunity. #fluseason #fluprevention #nationalhealthcaregroup #vaccinessavelives #stopthespread @PeterMakhambeni
