Urban October begins with World Habitat Day and concludes with World Cities Day, framing a month-long exploration of the challenges and opportunities presented by rapid urbanisation. Every year, a theme for Urban October is chosen. This year, Urban October 2024 focuses on youth. As Gauteng municipalities implement level 1 water restrictions. We look at how the province's metros and local municipalities are performing regarding water consumption as of September reports by Rand Water. Gauteng Metros continue to exceed their water demands with increasing populations and delipidating water network infrastructure worsening the situation. Equally, smaller municipalities have worrying daily per capita water usage perpetuated by unaccounted water losses, and poor water resources management amongst other factors. The South African Cities Network, 2016 State of Water in SA Cities Report: https://bit.ly/3BdqhGh, cautioned about some of the challenges manifesting recently. The report provided early warnings, cautioning that ageing infrastructure with inadequate investment along with illegal connections would continue to contribute significantly towards water losses if not attended to timely.
