Realising the full potential of marginalised and disadvantaged women and girls to access opportunities in STEM fields

About us

TechnoGirl is an innovative programme for girls and young women who show an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Conceptualised in 2004 by founding partner Uweso Consulting in collaboration with UNICEF and the Department of Basic Education. The strategic imperative of the TechnoGirl Programme is to narrow the discrepancy in opportunities that still exist between men and women and impede social and economic transformation.

International Literacy Day 2024: Empowering Young Women in STEM Through Literacy Since 1967, International Literacy Day has reminded us of the critical importance of literacy in building a just, peaceful, and sustainable society. At TechnoGirl Trust, we recognise that literacy is the foundation upon which the future of young women in STEM is built. As we celebrate this day, we emphasise the essential role literacy plays in unlocking opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) for young girls from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds in South Africa. Our mission at TechnoGirl Trust is to shape the future by growing the potential of these young women through Job Shadowing, Post School Mentorship, and Digital Skills Training. By fostering literacy and STEM education together, we are not just creating future mathematicians, engineers, scientists, and tech leaders; we are empowering young women to achieve their purpose and unlock economic freedom. On this International Literacy Day, let's reaffirm our commitment to creating a more literate, just, and sustainable world—starting with the girls who will shape the future.

“To close the gender gap in tech, we must start by providing young women with the exposure and opportunities that will shape their future,” says Lea-Anne Moses, COO at Suppple. Suppple is proud to announce its partnership with the TechnoGirlTrust, which will offer young women from South Africa the chance to job-shadow at our Cape Town headquarters. Beginning in the September 2024 school holidays, this initiative will take place three times a year for the next four years, providing these young women with direct experience and insights into the tech industry. This initiative addresses a pressing issue: in South Africa, for every two women graduating with a STEM degree, there are five men. This disparity highlights the need for greater awareness and opportunities for young women in tech. Our partnership with the TechnoGirlTrust is a concrete step towards bridging that gap. But we’re not stopping at job-shadowing. Suppple is customising the programme to focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. Participants will engage in hackathons and innovation labs, tackling real-world challenges that impact South Africa. They will also receive training in entrepreneurship, learning how to start and scale a tech business, secure funding, and navigate the startup ecosystem. “Beyond inclusion, this programme emphasises the importance of belonging - ensuring that these young women don’t just have a seat at the table but feel that they truly belong in the tech industry. We are committed to supporting these young women as they develop the skills and confidence needed to thrive in the industry,” adds Moses. This initiative is designed to create a pipeline of future leaders in tech. Nelson Mandela Pad Drive Update As we continue with the Nelson Mandela Pad Drive, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has contributed to this important cause so far. Thanks to your generosity, 2707 pads have been donated, allowing 40 out of 112 schools to benefit from this initiative. While we have made significant progress, there is still a shortfall of 4,797 pads to reach our target of 7,504 pads. Every donation makes a meaningful impact, and your support has brought us closer to ensuring that young girls across South Africa have the resources they need to attend school with confidence and dignity. A Special Thank You to everyone who has already donated funds and pads. Your contributions are making a tangible difference, and we are deeply grateful for your commitment to empowering girls through education. Our work is far from over. We will continue to seek out ways to bridge the gap and support the schools that still need our help. Together, we can ensure that no girl is held back due to a lack of basic sanitary products. Thank you once again for your unwavering support, and let's keep the momentum going! #NelsonMandelaPadDrive #EmpowerHer #TechnoGirlTrust #SupportGirlsEducation
