Science of Protecting Life

About us

Biovac was founded in 2003 to revive and restore South Africa’s vaccine manufacturing capabilities. We are an African based manufacturer contributing towards filling the gap that exists in the lack of African vaccine manufacturing capability. We recognise that we’ll only achieve this if we match scientific innovation through local biotechnology skills with the most advanced manufacturing technology and global partnerships. We work closely with local academic institutions, global pharmaceutical companies, the public sector as well as private sector. Some of our achievements are described below: We manufacture highly advanced vaccines on behalf of leading international biopharmaceutical companies. Biovac is licensed to manufacture a fully liquid hexavalent vaccine from Sanofi that targets and protects against six childhood diseases. In 2021, we envisage to start the manufacture of a multivalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine from Pfizer. We supply over 15-million doses of vaccines a year in South Africa and neighbouring countries under strict cold chain conditions. We have built inhouse product development capability and technologies and have successfully out-licensed one of our technologies to international manufacturers. We are working to establish new safeguards against pathogens like group B streptococcus bacteria, a rising cause of sepsis and meningitis in newborns. To do this vital work, we rely on sophisticated technology and, above all, the skills and dedication of more than 350 highly trained team members. Along with our partners, we’ve invested over R800 million in infrastructure and skills development at our manufacturing facilities in Cape Town. These investments are resulting in estimated benefits of more than R500-million a year to the national economy.

NEWS ALERT! Biovac partners with global biopharmaceutical company, EuBiologics co.,Ltd for the technology transfer of a Meningococcal Meningitis vaccine for Africa. 💉 Biovac, today signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with global South Korean-based manufacturer EuBiologics, for the technology transfer of a Meningococcal Meningitis pentavalent conjugate vaccine. 💉 This collaboration is a significant development for Biovac, as it would allow for the local production and distribution of a life-saving vaccine for use across Africa.  💉 This Meningococcal vaccine candidate which is currently under clinical development and is planned to be locally manufactured in Africa for Africa is a particularly important vaccine as it protects against the relevant circulating serotypes for our continent. In addition, the vaccine will be a fully liquid vaccine which allows for ease of use.  Morena Makhoana Yeong Ok Baik #VaccineManufacturing #TechnologyTransfer #Collaboration #EuBiologics #ProudlyBiovac Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eHcqmgQZ

Today Morena Makhoana represented #teamBiovac and Farrah Losper represented African Vaccine Manufacturing Initiative (AVMI) at the Strategic Roundtable on Strengthening Local Production in Africa, alongside the launch of the African Vaccine Manufacturing Accelerator in Paris. The roundtable, co-ordinated by the The World Bank Group, the Africa CDC, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance discussed how partnerships can support the development of a robust vaccine manufacturing ecosystem across the value chain in Africa. This event brough together key stakeholders from MDBs, multilaterals, regional agencies, vaccine suppliers, and bilateral partners, who engaged on opportunities for strengthening vaccine manufacturing on the African continent, developing paths to success, creating an enabling environment, and identifying more investment opportunities and interventions that could further support and compliment the AVMA initiative’s long-term success.#VaccineManufacturing #LocalManufacturing #Africa #ForOurFuture #GlobalHealth

#teamBiovac is excited to share that two new manufacturing partnerships were announced today during the AVMA launch in Paris. We celebrate expanding on our 20-year partnership with Sanofi, as well as our new partnership with EuBiologics.        Our latest partnership with Sanofi is for Biovac to produce their Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) at our South African plant. Sanofi is one of the largest producers of IPV and only one of two European based manufacturers of this much needed vaccine. IPV is a key vaccine that is utilised against poliomyelitis disease especially on the African continent. This will mark our second manufacturing partnership with Sanofi, with the first being the hexavalent vaccine that Biovac currently produces in South Africa.      Furthermore, since signing a memorandum of understanding in September 2023, we met in Paris to finalise the signing of our technology transfer agreement with EuBiologics Co., Ltd. today. This partnership will enable the technology transfer of a fully liquid Meningococcal Pentavalent Conjugate Vaccine, which is unique in its presentation and is much needed in the African Meningitis Belt which spans from Senegal in the West to Ethiopia in the East.       These two exciting announcements come on the back of the significant progress #teamBiovac is making every day, in the development of our Oral Cholera Vaccine (OCV), which enables Biovac to be an end-to-end vaccine drug substance and drug product manufacturer.   The three projects aim to increase local vaccine manufacturing on African soil, thus filling a significant gap in the current prevention and treatment of related diseases and outbreaks on the continent.     Our team is fortunate to have so much meaningful work in our reach – we are geared up and we are ready!         #ItJustKeepsGettingBetter@Biovac#VaccinesforAfrica#ProudlyBiovac

It’s been months in the making, we are pleased that the long-anticipated AVMA launch is finally here! #teamBiovac Morena Makhoana and Farrah Losper are in attendance at the Global Forum for Vaccine Sovereignty and Innovation, hosted by France, alongside the African Union and Gavi. During this event, GAVI’s innovative financing instrument, the much anticipated African Vaccine Manufacturing Accelerator (AVMA) was launched today.    AVMA is designed to disburse up to US$ 1 billion to African vaccine manufacturers over the next ten years and aims to act as a catalyst towards an ecosystem reset which will see sustainable vaccine manufacturing on the continent in line with the African Union’s call for 60% of the continent’s vaccine requirements to be met by African manufacturers by 2040.   It’s going to be a full 2 days in Paris with this, and various other related roundtable events lined up. There is certainly no other place we’d rather be. P.S: We have some exciting news of our own, but more on that later. Watch the space...
