Empowering persons with disabilities is essential for inclusive development in Zambia. This October, UNDP, Zambia Agency for Persons with Disabilities, Disability Rights Watch - DRW and Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission - CEEC conducted a training in Muchinga Province on Disability Inclusive Budgeting, Inclusive Financial Management, Budget Tracking and Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA). With over 1.5 million Zambians living with disabilities, it’s crucial that our policies and programmes prioritize their socio-economic inclusion. This training equiped Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) with the skills and knowledge to advocate for inclusive budgeting and address key challenges like PSEA and gender-based violence. Together with partners, UNDP is committed to ensuring that persons with disabilities have a stronger voice to advocate for disability inclusion and Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) compliance in Zambia. 🇿🇲

The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction #DRRday was commemorated under the theme “Empowering the Next Generation for a Resilient Future.” The increasing frequency and intensity of disasters demand urgent action. As Zambia faces the challenges of climate change, droughts, and potential floods, it is crucial to empower our youth to take part in creating a safer, more resilient Zambia. The future of the nation rests on the ability of young people to lead the way in disaster risk management. Delivering remarks on behalf of the United Nations in Zambia’s Resident Coordinator, Beatrice Mutali, the UNDP Zambia Resident Representative James Wakiaga noted, “On this International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, and every day, we have a responsibility to future generations to create a safer, more resilient world.” The Government of Zambia, with support from the United Nations, has been working tirelessly to strengthen disaster preparedness. From incorporating climate change in school curriculums to providing school feeding programs in drought-affected areas, Government is ensuring that children remain safe, healthy, and in school. "We must all work together, government, civil society, the private sector, and international partners to ensure a resilient future for Zambia. Disaster risk reduction is a shared responsibility." Speaking at the commemoration of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Vice President Mrs. W.K Mutale Nalumango said empowering the youth with knowledge, resources, and tools will build resilience and ensure a brighter future for generations to come. We join the Vice President in calling Zambians to commit to creating a resilient Zambia where everyone, especially children, is prepared to face future challenges.
