Thursday Nuggets! Of late there have been a number of queries about multiple stems on cabbages. Multiple stems occur in plants (not only cabbages) when the growing tip is either removed or damaged. The growth elongating hormones are producing just behind the growing tip. When this is affected the hormone balance in the plant is upset. The plant reacts by making more stems. In cabbages multiple stems are associated with an attack by Diamond Back Moth (Plutella xylostella) but can occur when crop chemicals are used with an excessively high concentration. Diamond Back Moth invariably attacks the soft tissue around the growing tip first. Cabbage Star 3311, Lunaria and Kilimo are available in stock. Visit us at 73 Ridge Road Avondale Harare or any of Sales reps nationwide. Contact us on 0719599253/0775708920/0714123115 for any assistance. #farming #Charterseeds #SeedsOfSuccess

Know-How is a wonderful thing. It is the most valuable commodity in the world. Not gold, silver, diamonds or oil, but Know-How. To this end Charter Seeds have put in a demonstration trial plot at head office in Ridge Road, Avondale, Harare. The plot will also be used for training purposes. It is a fixed bed system. It will allow Charter Seeds to examine and show to farmers new climate-smart varieties before they go commercial. The potential of selected existing Starke Ayres commercial varieties in climate change will also be studied. The plot will allow Charter Seeds to investigate the use of new bio chemicals coming onto the market. Some of these have great potential to minimise the effects of climate change. Factors like the number of times one application of fertilizer and residual moisture can be used for subsequent crops in fixed beds will be established. No further soil preparation will be necessary. Some crops like onions leave extensive ramified root channels in the soil, which can be used by subsequent crops. At the 2024 Charter Seeds – Starke Ayres exhibition at ART Farm excellent crops of baby cabbages, broccoli, lettuce and green beans were grown when crops were either sown directly or transplanted into fixed beds after onion crops were harvested. Early growth was exceptionally vigorous. The savings in time were enormous, but different crop sequences will need to be defined. The attached photograph shows Senior Agronomist Isaac Amos and Trainee Agronomist Special Nhari lecturing on onions to Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) farmers Gertrude Mupeka, Noni Chakaura and Last Maudzeke from Mbire. Other ADRA farmers travelled from Muzarabani in the Zambezi Valley. The onion varieties in the photograph show Starke Ayres onion varieties ARABELLA, MZURI, AGRIPPA, and TUSKER. These varieties are being studied, both at the plot and in the field to see if they can fit in with and enhance the performance of current iconic Starke Ayres onion variety IRATI. A second photograph shows Charter Seeds Managing Director Glenn Campbell discussing the coming summer programme with Senior Agronomist Divara Phiri.Should any farmer or farmers’ group wish to make use of this facility they can be arranged by phoning P.A Lynne, on 0783 732887. #Charterseeds #SeedsOfSuccess
