  • Let's take steps to make ‘girls’ vision for the future’ a reality this #InternationalDayOfTheGirlChild. This year’s theme, conveys both the need for urgent action and persistent hope, driven by the power of girls’ voices and vision for the future. Today’s generation of girls is disproportionately affected by global crises of climate, conflict, poverty and pushback on hard won gains for human rights and gender equality. Too many girls are still denied their rights, restricting their choices and limiting their futures. But girls cannot realize this vision alone. They need allies who listen to and respond to their needs. Source: https://lnkd.in/gn6uQwz #InternationalDayOfGirlChild #GirlChildDay

  • #DidYouKnow The world is rapidly urbanizing, and many urban residents these days are young people, especially in some countries in Africa and Asia. Currently, youth in the global South make up 70 per cent or more of cities. The global observance of World Habitat Day, marked on 7 October 2024, aims to address the challenges and opportunities of rapid urbanization by focusing on the active involvement of young people in shaping sustainable cities and communities. https://lnkd.in/gd7hmU9

  • #DidYouKnow Extreme heat affecting the health of 70% of the global workforce. Shifting weather patterns damaging our harvests. Rising sea levels increasing the chances of catastrophic floods. The impacts of climate change are global in scope and unprecedented in scale. Since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily through the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas. Without drastic action today, adapting to these impacts in the future will be more difficult and costly. We are at a defining moment to change the path of humanity. UN Secretary-General recently called for urgent international cooperation to address extreme heat, another important threat brought by climate change. https://lnkd.in/gDX2M3t5

  • #DidYouKnow Every year, the City of Hiroshima holds the Peace Memorial Ceremony to console the souls of those lost to the atomic bombing on 6 August 1945, as well as pray for the realization of lasting world peace. Weapons of mass destruction, in particular nuclear weapons, continue to be of primary concern, owing to their destructive power and the threat that they pose to humanity. The UN has sought to eliminate such weapons ever since its establishment. Let’s work together to banish these devices of destruction to the history books, once and for all. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Genbaku Dome) was the only structure left standing in the area where the first atomic bomb exploded on 6 August 1945. It was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1996. https://lnkd.in/d9QunUGJ

  • #DidYouKnow Chess is one of the most ancient, intellectual and cultural games, with a combination of sport, scientific thinking and elements of art. Chess is a global gamethat promotes fairness, inclusion and mutual respect. It can contribute to an atmosphere of tolerance and understanding among peoples and nations. Chess also offers important opportunities in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, including strengthening education, and advancing the empowerment of women and girls. On this World Chess Day (20 July), let’s celebrate chess for its important contributions to these values. While chess originated as a game that modeled a battlefield, today we have come to think of chess as a game that is more closely linked with peace, and the concept of a chessboard is often linked with diplomacy and multilateralism. https://lnkd.in/egiJApR

  • #DidYouKnow The High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), the main UN platform for the follow-up and review of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), is being held on 8-17 July 2024 under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council. Under the theme “Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions”, the forum will review in-depth: SDG 1. End poverty; SDG 2. End hunger; SDG 13. Climate action; SDG 16. Peace and justice; and SDG 17. Partnerships. Eradicating extreme poverty for all people everywhere by 2030 is a pivotal goal of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

  • #DidYouKnow Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have the potential to leapfrog climate solutions around the globe, transforming climate mitigation and adaptation approaches. However, skill gaps exist between AI providers, governments and users. Moreover, the ethical and safe use of this tool for the climate will require strong enabling and regulatory frameworks. Making AI a meaningful climate technology also requires minimizing the emissions and resource impact of the technology itself. UNU-EHS and UNFCCC are hosting a meeting in Bonn (1-2 July) with experts, representatives and decision makers. Equitable access to AI, especially for Least Developed Countries (LDCs), demands awareness of existing digital divides, data gaps and biases. https://lnkd.in/eeFEsMdy

  • #DidYouKnow International Albinism Awareness Day, celebrated annually on 13 June, was launched 10 years ago. Due to their unique physical appearance caused by the lack of melanin in their hair, skin and eyes, persons with albinism have been subject to marginalization and social exclusion, and even persecution fed by superstition. This year we celebrate the strides made through the tireless efforts of albinism groups from around the world and reflect on the continued legal, policy and practical changes still required to ensure the full and equal enjoyment of rights by persons with albinism. Albinism should be recognized as a type of disability, including the need to provide students with albinism with appropriate accommodations. https://lnkd.in/euBARaT
