There is one victim of war that often goes unnoticed: the environment 🌍 The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) found that over the last 60 years, at least 40% of all internal conflicts have been linked to the exploitation of natural resources. Today, 6 November, is recognised as the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict. At the United Nations Environment Assembly earlier this year, UN Secretary-General António Guterres implored humanity to act urgently upon climate injustices, even during times of crisis. #environment #war #UNEP #conflict #climatechange #sustainability

"We want to drum and the drum must be loud." It is so powerful when women come together to share their experiences, insights, and solutions. At #AidEx 2024 in Geneva last week, Cristina Muñoz Pavón, Julian Joyce Acoko, Dr. Mary Y Okumu, PhD, Maria Krisch, and Mia Zickerman-White of CTG led a panel on empowering women in fragile and conflict-affected regions and it became a sharing of resilience in real-time. As Cristina said, “Women are not a homogenous group.” For one, peace might mean access to food and water; for another, it’s reuniting with loved ones. For yet another, it may mean access to sanitary supplies, or cosmetics. And that’s exactly why we must listen to what women need. At a time when funding that actually reaches local, grassroots women-led organisations is less than 1%, dialogues like this are vital. Diverse voices bring solutions as unique as the challenges each woman faces in conflict zones. **Pictured: Dr. Mary Okumu – ForAfrika Cristina Muñoz Pavón – Alianza por la Solidaridad-ActionAid Maria Krisch – Women's Peace & Humanitarian Fund (WPHF) Joyce Acoko – NORTHERN UGANDA WOMEN AND CHILDREN SUPPORT INITIATIVE INC Mia Zickerman-White – CTG AidEx - The Global Humanitarian Aid Community #WomenInConflict #WomenEmpowerment #GenderEquity #HumanitarianAid #DutyofCare

It’s been a thought-provoking 2 days at #AidEx 2024 in Geneva. Our team has engaged with clients, partners, and key members of the global humanitarian community to discuss how we can collectively drive meaningful impact in fragile regions. Key themes have emerged: 💡 Women’s empowerment remains central to building sustainable solutions in conflict-affected areas. When local actors, particularly women, lead, communities benefit. 💡 The role of the private sector in humanitarian aid is indispensable. From technology to logistics, integrating private-sector expertise can unlock new potential for effective, scalable solutions. 💡 Fit-for-purpose technology has shown its power to transform how aid is delivered, ensuring that those most in need are reached faster and more efficiently. But for AidEx and the conversations here to be sustainable, it can't remain an event alone. We look forward to sharing more insights and how we continue to evolve our support of humanitarian missions in the days to come. This is just the beginning. Pictured: 1. We're looking forward to what comes next. #HumanitarianAid #WomensEmpowerment #TechForGood #PrivateSectorPartnerships #Sustainability

"Enabling people to find a pathway to recovery gets to the heart of humanity itself." – Ib Petersen, Ambassador of Denmark to the United Nations, at AidEx 2024. The message is clear: to improve delivery of humanitarian aid, local actors must lead. They understand their communities, they know the terrain, and they’re positioned to respond faster and more effectively. At AidEx, the conversation is on local partnerships, funding for local actors, and local procurement. These aren’t just buzzwords – they’re critical levers for longterm recovery and resilience. It’s been called ‘history’s greatest silence’, which is why I’m proud to be attending the 15th Year Anniversary of the Establishment of the Mandate on Sexual Violence in Conflict (CRSV) during the Open Debate this week at the UN HQ in New York. How do we measure progress? One positive step is the shift in how CRSV is viewed, previously seen as ‘an inevitable by product of war’ it is now accepted as ‘a war crime, crime against humanity, and constituent act of genocide that cannot be amnestied’. This event reflects on what more can be done to prevent and deter these crimes. We will hear from senior members of the UN, UN Member States, Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, several First Ladies, but most importantly we will hear from the survivors of CRSV and activists working on the front line. To learn how you can play a role in prevention and response to CRSV read the white paper we co-authored with UN Action https://lnkd.in/dtVteMFw #EndRapeinWar #CRSV #UnitedNations #UNAction #WPSAgenda #WPSHA #FemaleFirst #ComittedtoGood United Nations
