It’s here. It’s finally here. 2024 MALBEC WORLD DAY you classy wine loving people. (as in the wine is classy yeah) In the run up to this year’s celebrations I have been teasing you with The Big Interview of ’24. Don’t get me wrong, it’s hardly Frost/Nixon, but this is much nicer. I was privileged to spend some time talking to the wonderful Martín Kaiser, Head Winemaker at Doña Paula Wines. It’s still harvest in Argentina, and that’s his busiest time. Yet he still found time to chat to me and share his immense knowledge and great insight. What you’re seeing here is barely a snapshot but, y’know, Instagram isn’t a place for long form content. During the course of our conversation we covered the current vintage and what to expect, Martin’s career and the history of Doña Paula. We then consider Malbec itself, and its suitability to Argentina…or perhaps rather, Argentina’s suitability to Malbec. Martin talks me through the changes he has seen in Malbec and winemaking over the last 2 decades. We encounter the impact of climate change and subtly touch on changing consumer attitudes. I’ve shared a couple of wines from Martin over the last few days (I’m hoping you’ve visited Waitrose & Partners and/or Asda). You already know what I think of the wines, but now you can hear what they’re all about directly from the man responsible for bringing them to us. So, this Malbec World Day, open a bottle of El Alto or Malbado and find yourself half an hour to hear incredible wisdom, knowledge, and insight from an absolute gentleman and understated hero of Argentine wine. The link is in my bio and/or in the comments (I do grapes not tech yeah) and share with me your thoughts on these wines. Doña Paula produce a wide range of great wines, and go far beyond Malbec. They’re looked after in the UK by North South Wines Ltd | B Corp™ and I hope to bring you a few more bottles in the future. Until then, my sincere thanks to Martin for his time and to Caroline Park and Manny Doidge for their generosity and not dodging my calls and emails. This would not have happened without them. Vamos Argentina y viva el Malbec! Kim Wilson LUCY WARD Tim Carlisle Wines of Argentina

URGENT ANNOUNCEMENT FOR ALL LOVERS OF WINE! (Y’all really should already know this) Next week is Malbec World Day! The 17th April has become an annual celebration of this mighty variety that left France, became a global superstar by honing its craft in Argentina, and has since travelled to all corners of the globe. Which is doubly impressive as globe’s don’t have corners. HEY! Malbec can do what it wants yeah! In an effort to ensure that you have something to drink, I have sought out (been kindly offered) 2 great bottles for you to buy ahead of the celebrations. I’m starting with Doña Paula Wines El Alto Malbec. Finca El Alto is located in Lujan de Cuyo, the real home of Malbec. This 430 hectare plot is home to vines planted in 1959 which, alongside warm days and cooler evenings, allows for expressive, interesting, and new wave Malbec to be produced. Earlier today (as this post goes out) I was very lucky to grab some time with Doña Paula’s Head Winemaker Martín Kaiser. We filmed an interview around his work, Doña Paula, Malbec, and his winemaking style. The main event will drop on Malbec World Day so you have something extra to look forward to. But what of this El Alto? It’s all lifted red fruits, crunchy berries, licks of herbs and spice, delicate oak, rounded tannins, and wonderful freshness. It’s not the new face of Malbec, but a face we’ve forgotten about amongst all those bigger more extracted expressions. This is beautifully balanced and enticing. Now you’ve read/watched this, you need to head to your nearest Waitrose & Partners and take advantage of their 25% off 6 or more bottles. This is a great value wine at full shelf price, but in this deal it’s ludicrous. How can you say no?* I’ll share details of the second Malbec in due course, but make sure you’ve got 17th April marked in your diary so you can relax and enjoy the interview with the brilliant Martin…oh, and celebrate Malbec World Day too. My thanks to Martin for his time, and to Caroline Park for setting all this up and being generous with her time. *this is rhetorical, if you can say no, I’m not interested in why. # Wines of Argentina North South Wines Ltd | B Corp™
