Proud to announce the newest BioNanoNet Association member! The Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry (LSIWC) balances fundamental and applied research with the aim to produce #sustainable commodities and innovative value-added products from renewable resources. Historically, #wood has been the institute’s central research subject, both as a material in its own right, and also as a feedstock for extraction, mechanical processing, and thermochemical conversion. Nowadays, researchers at LSIWC investigate various types of plant and microbial #biomass. The main fields of LSIWC research are: -wood and wood materials -biorefinery to obtain value-added products from lignocellulosic biomass -#greenchemistry -polymer synthesis, and -#biotechnologies The scientific infrastructure of LSIWC covers up-to-date analytical tools, versatile laboratory equipment, and a recently established pilot-scale facility to up-scale technologies developed by LSIWC and their partners. Look at these bright faces! 😃 You can be sure they have a good reason for their happy mood. Last week, we reached an exciting milestone in the #BMBF-funded #DiagnoSeps project: the first breadboard of our automated immunoassay device has been successfully delivered and installed! Together with our partners ASKION GmbH OEM-Services GmbH and Mast Diagnostica GmbH, we completed the hardware and software installation, followed by hands-on training and first experiments. The results? Very promising! A huge thank you to our external partners Dr. Mohammed Bakheit (Mast Diagnostica GmbH), Thomas Goldermann, Kevin Polinski, and Dr. Lutz Warzemann (Askion GmbH). On the Hahn-Schickard side, Dr. Aruna Chandra SINGH, Dr. Desirée Baumgartner, and Dr. Konstantinos Mitsakakis from the Immunoassay Group, as well as our colleagues from the Robotics and Instrumentation Group – Larissa Schiedel, Daniel Frejek, Matías H., and Dr. Sabrina Kartmann – did a fantastic job preparing the visit, executing the experiments, and fostering excellent collaboration. Wrapping Up Four Years of Innovation! Yesterday, March 11th, 2025, we hosted the Final Webinar of HARMLESS, marking the culmination of four years of groundbreaking work in developing a Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design (#SSbD) approach for Advanced Materials (#AdMa) in product development! 🔬 Key achievements: 👉 Contributions to test method harmonization, and New Approach Methodologies (#NAMs) development 👉 Contributions to Integrated Approaches to Testing and Assessment (#IATAs) & Adverse Outcome Pathways (#AOPs) 👉 Largest dataset on industrially relevant AdMa, valuable for several follow-up studies and projects 👉 Major contributions to the Safe-and-Sustainable-Innovation Approach (#SSIA), with a modular HARMLESS SSbD, an improved Early Warning System (#EWS) for regulatory preparedness, and a user-friendly Decision Support System (#DSS) We were thrilled by the overwhelming interest in our final webinar — thank you to all participants! 🙌 Looking forward to future collaborations!
