It was a privilege to chair this discussion yesterday at International Peace Institute (IPI) on the start of the 2025 #Peacebuilding Architecture Review (PBAR). Thanks to United Nations PBSO and Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding (CCCPA) for their partnership on the event. With cascading peace and security challenges the world over, the PBAR is an opportunity that must be seized to develop a more robust and effective multilateral commitment to peace. Ten years ago the 2015 review expanded the peacebuilding agenda beyond post-conflict settings to incorporate sustaining peace as a universal agenda. But that horizontal expansion of the agenda was never met with a vertical commitment to strengthening and resourcing the institutions needed to deliver on that promise. Now is the time! IPI reviewed the 30+ outcome documents that were the result of last year’s informal phase of the review. Three general themes clearly emerged: 1) The peacebuilding and sustaining peace agenda is universal. No country is exempt from these efforts, and inclusive, national ownership is key. 2) The Peacebuilding Commission needs to be strengthened and empowered, in particular by improving its advisory & bridging capacity vis-á-vis the Security Council, General Assembly, ECOSOC, & Human Rights Council. And 3) innovative financing for peacebuilding must be a priority. We may not need to reinvent the wheel, but the car needs more fuel to get moving! The 2025 Peacebuilding Architecture Review (PBAR) kicks off today, uniting the UN, Member States, civil society and regional partners to assess progress and identify gaps in the peace and security architecture. At this pivotal moment, Head of Conflict Prevention and Sustaining Peace at UNU-CPR Erica Gaston proposes enhancing the UN Peacebuilding Commission’s engagement with the General Assembly and with other UN bodies to strengthen the peacebuilding commission's position and improve peacebuilding across the UN system: https://lnkd.in/gtFGdDcn

On January 27, IPI, in partnership with the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding (CCCPA) and the United Nations Peacebuilding Support Office (PBSO) in the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, co-hosted a workshop on the “2025 Peacebuilding Architecture Review: Key Emerging Themes for the Formal Phase.” This roundtable helped kick off the formal phase of the UN peacebuilding architecture review (PBAR) by synthesizing the main findings and recommendations from the informal phase and providing member states the opportunity to flag emerging themes. The Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support presented the report of the Secretary-General, and Egypt and Slovenia, the co-facilitators of the PBAR process, provided relevant updates for member states.
