What does it take to be an astronaut? 🚀 We tell stories that matter. And as we've been diving deep into European Space Agency - ESA's planetary defense mission, HERA, another question arises: Who are the people behind space exploration? Meet Carmen Possnig, an Austrian doctor who might soon make history. Out of 22,500 applicants, she was selected as a reserve astronaut for ESA. Her journey started with a childhood dream, sparked by a spontaneous answer in class: 🗣 "When I was about eight years old, my teacher asked what we wanted to be. I said astronaut—just to say something different. But since then, it became a dream always in the background." Now, she’s training for spaceflight, balancing her regular job with intense preparation. Astronauts don’t have to be specialists. They need to be adaptable, stress-resistant team players. Training starts with parabolic flights, where weightlessness lasts just 22 seconds: 🗣 "That first moment is always my favorite. You have about 40 serious scientists on board, but in that instant, everyone is laughing and cheering like little kids." But space travel is more than the thrill of floating. It's a test of endurance, mental strength, and teamwork. In this 1-minute clip, see how experts are bringing Scotland’s wilderness back to life. Our conservation heroes are doing amazing work—from satellite tagging golden eagles (each with its own personality!) and carefully ringing birds for long-term studies, to restoring peatlands that act as huge carbon sinks.
