Ever since aircraft and birds have shared the skies, there have been bird strikes. But what many travelers don't know, is that one of the ways our world's airports mitigate these strikes is by using birds of prey. "Pairing the right raptor to the right prey is key to the success of airport wildlife management programs. According to Transport Canada, seagulls are the number one nuisance birds at Canadian airports, requiring the use of large raptors like female peregrine falcons or Harris’s hawks to mitigate their threat." Journalist Jacqui Gibson was on the hunt for the world's most beautiful—and crowd-free—destination in the world. And she found it 300 miles off the south coast of New Zealand. "In the window that is the New Zealand summer, restricted numbers of tourists turn up on expedition vessels to hike and zodiac around the islands, disappearing soon after they arrive, and leaving no clue of having been there other than footprints on the forest floor." Havana is at a critical crossroads. 🇨🇺 Abysmal economic times, record migration, high food prices, and slow tourism post-pandemic engulf the country. The city is the capital of a country under the longest period of sanctions in the world: The 62-year-old US trade embargo against Cuba. Mind-boggling domestic hurdles stifle growth, too. The situation is so complex that “it has no name,” laments a despondent taxi-driving Habanero, the term for a Havana local. But even against this shambolic backdrop, a gathering of determined Habaneros thrives—and survives. These are those changemakers. Full story by Claire Boobyer ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gVBEmpHC

What if Airbnb was a co-op? Founded in 2007, Airbnb today has more than 7.7 million listings in 100,000 cities around the world. But in recent years, Airbnb has been a source of growing contention in an increasingly conscious travel and tourism industry. As of May 2023, more than 30 percent of US properties listed on Airbnb were managed by ‘mega-hosts’, with 21 or more property listings. The company, and others like it, has been blamed for increased rental prices and housing shortages, gentrification, and eroding the character of neighborhoods. But Airbnb’s pervasiveness in even the most remote corners of the world make booking with the company a hard habit to break, even for the most mindful travelers. Luckily, there are alternatives. It’s not always easy to find what you’re looking for, but with a bit of extra work and flexibility, it is possible. Read the full story by JoAnna Haugen ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gwyhT4wT
