📆 Today is Swallowing Awareness Day. 👥 Around one million Australians live with a swallowing difficulty (also known as dysphagia) and today is a great opportunity to raise awareness of this condition and how it can affect a person’s quality of life. Swallowing difficulties can occur at any stage of life and become more common as we get older, due to age-related changes in muscle strength, reflexes and coordination. Dysphagia affects: 🔸 15-30% of people aged 65 and above living in the community 🔸 50% of older people living in aged care People who have trouble swallowing are at risk of choking, poor nutrition and dehydration. If you’re having trouble with swallowing, a speech pathologist can assess and treat the issue. 👁️ Recognising symptoms like coughing while eating and/or drinking, frequent throat clearing, or a sensation of food stuck in the throat, can help you to seek timely advice. We have resources on swallowing for aged care providers, workers and older people receiving care. You can access them via our website: 👩 Providers: https://lnkd.in/gRangcHm 👨 Workers: https://lnkd.in/gQSV3Z_M 👴 Older people: https://lnkd.in/gnY23PgB #ACQSC #AgedCare #Dysphagia #SwallowAware2025
