Thank you to our speakers Isabelle Zhu-Maguire (School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet)), Alison Coughlan (Health Consumers Centre), Christina Zorbas and Khalid Muse (Institute for Health Transformation, Deakin University) for sharing their insights into meaningful community engagement with youth and marginalised communities in our seminar on ‘Sharing Power’ earlier this week. The session highlighted several important points: ·        that meaningful community engagement requires centring marginalised voices and those with lived experience, ·        the need to disrupt traditional power dynamics, ·        embracing co-production with authentic partnerships By building trust, creating inclusive spaces and ways of working, and ensuring that participants have real influence in decision-making, we can ensure better, more sustainable outcomes for everyone in our communities. We are sorry circumstances prevented us from welcoming our Victorian contingent in person, but hope to be able to build on these important conversations in the future.

Scientists from the University of Newcastle and The Australian National University (ANU) have discovered how a critical enzyme works shedding new light on how cells control key processes in carbon fixation. The discovery could help engineer climate-resilient crops capable of sucking carbon dioxide from the atmosphere more efficiently, helping to produce more food in the process. The scientists say engineering crops that are more efficient at capturing and utilising carbon dioxide would provide a huge boost for the agricultural industry by vastly improving crop yield while reducing the demand for nitrogen fertiliser and irrigation systems. It would also ensure the world’s food systems are more resilient to climate change. So great heading over to the The Australian National University today to speak with students about biology in the workplace. With a BScAgr and MAppSci, both in biological fields, it was a real pleasure to share my career journey - from research assistant through to advocacy, public service, politics and diplomacy. As a Canberra-based university, it was also useful to provide a practical and tangible view of what it means to be a public servant with a science background, and what can be achieved in our line of work. And I’m always happy to spruik careers in agriculture as it’s such a rewarding sector to be involved in. Hopefully we’ll see some of these students come through the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry’s graduate program in the coming years too. Thanks Alison Bentley for inviting me.
