In 1907, the surrounding walls were knocked down to the main gate we can still see today. In 2008, Sungnyemun Gate was set on fire, which destroyed the majority of its roof, despite the firefighters’ effort. The restoration of the gate took 5 years, before it reopened in 2013, at the cost of 20 billion won ($22million AUD). If you are interested in visit this historical gate, it opens every day 9:00-18:00, except on Monday. It locates only 3-5 minutes from Seoul Station.
