🔔 We congratulate our 2024 President and 2025 Secretary of the AusIMM SQSC Tobias Massang. He had the special pleasure of representing the chapter at the 2024 AusIMM Congress in Perth. Please take a moment to read through his thoughts and experience 💭
From the 17th to the 18th of October, I was privileged to represent the AusIMM Southern Queensland Student Chapter at the 2024 AusIMM Congress in Perth. This year's Congress convened Communities of Interest (COIs) leaders from all ends of the country, to build on the theme of Connect, Celebrate and Elevate. Over the two days, I gained significant insight into the important role the institute plays within the resource sector, and witnessed the extensive work that COIs have contributed this year to their respective regions. One of my favourite sessions was Session 2 on Professional Standards. Through the session, insights into management of standards such as JORC and initiatives around promotion of learnings from revisions were explored. I also had the pleasure of being a panellist during the final session, Session 6: Engaging and Collaborating with Our Local Communities. This panel focussed on the extensive benefit gained from cross-collaboration between Student Chapters, New Professional Networks (NPN) and Branches. Hosted by Elyse Bosch - NPN ambassador for South Australia, I was joined on-stage by Olivia Ash - 2024 President of the UWA Student Chapter and WA NPN Ambassador Lauren Harding. Discussion focussed on UWA’s highly successful Student Meet Industry Nights, a range of NPN initiatives and our chapter’s hosting of the National Mining Games alongside assistance with the New Leader’s Summit. I would like to sincerely thank the AusIMM management team, namely Tilley Byrne, Miriam Way and Stephen Durkin, for their continual support of us students and commitment to aiding our professional development. I would like to thank the outgoing President, Nicole Brook for her work for the insitute throughout her tenure and congratulate the incoming 2025 AusIMM President, Chris Carr. I would also like to thank the AusIMM Southern Queensland Branch for supporting me to attend this year. I look forward to bringing these insights and new connections back with me to advance our Chapter into 2025.
