Water cover systems for tailings storage facilities (TSF) can be effective in reducing acid and metalliferous drainage by limiting oxygen exposure to the tailings; however, since the use of water covers also means the TSF becomes a water storage facility, it must be designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, such as droughts, floods, or seismic events. In this month's Conversation on Closure, we explore the use of water covers in TSF closure, highlighting key principles from the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management for safe implementation, and discussing alternative approaches for effective and responsible TSF closure.
