A massive thank you to JENNMAR Australia for hosting 20 of our students at their factory! The tour began with an insightful overview of Jennmar's global business, led by ROBERT SCOTT. We learned about their quality assurance practices and how JENNMAR supports both Australian and international mining with a strong focus on safety, not just by producing quality products but also by monitoring and testing installation practices. Next, we had the opportunity to visit the factory floor on a tour led by WA Production Manager Bikram Jeet Singh and witness the transformation of flat roll steel into the friction lok (splittie) bolts, a staple for underground miners. Bikram's explanation on how the automated and semi-automated manufacturing processes were designed to ensure the consistent, safe, and efficient production of reliable, cost-effective products was particularly fascinating. We also explored the production line for the friction lok bolts, including the debonded modification, which is particularly useful for dynamic applications. Ex-jumbo operator and current Technical Sales Representative Shanon Mills shared valuable insights into installation best practices and operator duty of care. As mining engineers, it was a unique experience to see the production process behind the bolts we rely on daily, and was reassuring to witness the high standards maintained throughout their design and manufacturing. Thank you, JENNMAR Australia!

“If you want to change the world, you're going to need mining for that.” That’s what makes it such a great career choice for young people, says Wytse de Boer, a graduate Mining Engineer at Newmont Australia. Wytse works as an underground operator at our Cadia operations and says he was initially attracted to mining because of the great job security and the ability to solve real-world problems. He says mining is also a great industry to work in because of the opportunities it provides for travel worldwide.   Wytse says one the biggest misconception about mining is that it is dangerous, and while hazards do exist, he says the stringent safety processes in place make it extremely safe – something he values working with explosives on a daily basis.   We love your advocacy for mining as a career choice Wytse, and we are so proud to have you as part of the Newmont team. Watch Wytse’s full interview here: https://lnkd.in/gpwJkDsd Keep an eye out for the next intake for Newmont Australia’s award-winning graduate program in early 2025!

  • We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Rio Tinto for providing 14 fortunate students from Curtin University and The University of Western Australia with an unforgettable FIFO overnight experience to Yandicoogina Mine. The journey began with an early flight from Perth to Barimunya Airport, right in the heart of the stunning Pilbara. Upon arrival, we delved straight into learning about Rio Tinto's iron ore operations in Western Australia and what sets Yandicoogina apart, particularly its unique ore quality and deposit characteristics. After lunch, we were escorted by a light vehicle (LV) down to the bottom of the pit, passing multiple 360-tonne autonomous trucks on their way to the crusher. We even had the chance to get up close to a massive excavator. Spending time in the pit allowed us to examine the ore and chat with the operators about their work. Next, we visited the crusher and passed several 230-carriage trains at the load-out area, with impressive stackers and reclaimers operating in the distance. The sheer scale of everything at Yandicoogina is truly breathtaking! After that, we headed to the wet plant, where the ore is beneficiated to meet precise customer specifications. A lift took us to the top of the wet plant (followed by many, many stairs down), before we continued to the Mobile Equipment Maintenance workshop. There, we saw a haul truck, an excavator, and a loader all undergoing repairs. Outside, we witnessed the team changing a haul truck’s tyre – an incredibly smooth and efficient process that took only a few minutes! After spending time in the heat, we welcomed the chance to cool off with the Mine Technical Services team. Conversations with the geologists, mine surveyors, and mining engineers gave us invaluable insights into how they ensure that the right ore is mined in the correct order, on time, delivering optimal outcomes for both Rio Tinto and its customers. That evening, food trucks at the camp provided a great meal before we returned to our "dongas" for a well-earned rest, ready for our flight back to Perth the next morning. Overall, we had an amazing time, with countless questions answered and firsthand exposure to what a career in mining could look like after graduation. A huge THANK YOU to the team from Rio Tintos Yandicooginda mine for answering all our questions, in particular Andrew Leong, Jazmine Reading, Dempsey May, Qiushi (Joey) Chen, Sylvia Sen, Jim Gordon, Hugo Calo, Rodrigo Bagatini l MBA, Simon Stratford, James Emslie, Wade Ansell and Kathleen Cox, the AusIMM Curtin Student Chapter and everyone involved behind the scenes for making this such an amazing trip.
