  • AEMO is launching a Research Partnerships Initiative to deepen our engagement with the national and international research community. As part of this, we are sharing our priority research topics, identifying key knowledge gaps where collaboration can drive meaningful impact.     These priorities align with AEMO’s NEM and SWIS Engineering Roadmaps and our work with the International System Operators Network research agenda. As our understanding of system needs evolves, so too will these focus areas – ensuring our research remains relevant and impactful.     We also welcome ideas from the sector that align with AEMO’s objectives. If you're a researcher or an AEMO subject matter expert interested in collaborating, we’d love to hear from you, simply reach out to research@aemo.com.au for more information or visit: https://lnkd.in/g9XeriaK

  • Earlier this month, we wrapped up the third and final Industry Workshop for the CER Data Exchange Industry Co-Design Project in Melbourne - marking a significant step toward a smarter, more connected energy future. With 70+ industry leaders from networks, retailers, aggregators, equipment manufacturers, and government, we tackled key trade-offs, design priorities, and MVP Use Cases for the CER Data Exchange. A huge thank you to all participants for your invaluable contributions over the past nine months - your insights have been instrumental in shaping the High-Level Design. In May, we’ll be releasing our final report and hosting a public webinar to share key findings from the Co-Design Process. Catch up on the workshop insights here: https://lnkd.in/gdJWkDG6

  • AEMO's latest Gas Statement of Opportunities (GSOO) highlights the need for new investment in Australia's east coast gas market to address forecast supply shortfalls in southern states. Southern production is forecast to decline faster than demand, reinforcing the need for new investment. While gas consumption has dropped in recent years, the risk of peak-day shortfalls and seasonal gaps emerge from 2028, requiring new investments in production, storage, and transportation, or LNG regasification terminals. “This year’s gas adequacy report again highlights the structural changes in the East Coast Gas Market, particularly that production is falling faster than demand in the southern states, reinforcing the need for investment in new gas supply,” AEMO CEO Daniel Westerman said. Alongside the GSOO, AEMO has also published the 2025 Victorian Gas Planning Report (VGPR), which provides a five-year assessment of Victoria’s gas supply and demand balance. • Western Australia’s power system is rapidly transforming – bringing new challenges for our operational teams to match supply and demand in real-time. Last week’s thunderstorm and cloud cover caused a sudden drop in generation from rooftop solar, resulting in a rapid upswing in electricity from the grid, with demand surging 49% from 1,600 MW to 2,385 MW in 40 minutes. In WA today, rooftop solar is currently installed on more than a third of homes and its uptake is expected to continue rising. Flexible grid-scale capacity, such as batteries and gas generation, which can ramp-up quickly when needed, will play a huge role in maintaining system security and reliability during these vast swings in supply and demand. • Tomorrow, 8 March, is International Women’s Day! This year, AEMO is proud to stand alongside industry leaders in driving gender equality and fostering a more inclusive energy sector. We’ve made significant strides in improving gender balance, especially in leadership roles, but we acknowledge there is still more work to do. The latest Champions of Change Coalition Impact Report highlights ongoing gender pay gaps across the energy industry, with figures showing disparities in base salary and total remuneration. At AEMO, our commitment to closing this gap remains strong, and we continue to take action to create a fairer and more equitable workplace. This year’s IWD theme, “March Forward,” is a powerful reminder that real change happens when we take collective and sustained action. 📺 Hear below from our CEO, Daniel Westerman, on what #InternationalWomensDay means to him and AEMO.
