The AFP is extremely proud to be part of the first ever deployment of the Pacific Police Support Group (PPSG) to Samoa, during Samoa’s successful Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). More than 40 police officers from 11 Pacific countries were part of this deployment under the direction of Samoa Police, and operationally led by an officer of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary. It includes three AFP officers and is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together. The PPSG is part of the Pacific Policing Initiative (PPI), a collective regional response to ensure peace and security across the Pacific. The PPSG is a deployable police force that can provide assistance during major events and support in times of crisis, at the request of a Pacific country. A huge thank you to Samoa Police for welcoming the PPSG and trusting them to support a safe and secure CHOGM. We look forward to continuing to work closely with all our Pacific policing partners to ensure peace, security and prosperity across the Pacific.

That’s a wrap 🎁 An Italian national has been sentenced to three years’ imprisonment in Western Australia for his role in a plot to import ketamine into Australia hidden inside a package of Christmas gifts. AFP officers arrested the man in January after Australian Border Force officers found about 1.5kg of high purity ketamine hidden inside stuffed toys in a consignment that arrived from Spain on Christmas Day. AFP officers replaced the illicit drugs with a harmless substance before the package was delivered to a residence in Coogee. Officers executed a search warrant at the address and arrested the 27-year-old man.

AFP intelligence passed to the FBI – Federal Bureau of Investigation has led to the arrest of an American man for an alleged sexual assault of an unconscious adult victim in a dental clinic, that was filmed and shared online. The FBI’s action follows the AFP’s investigation into an Australian man, whose phones were subject to digital forensic analysis and the illicit video was allegedly located. The AFP-led Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation Victim Identification Team identified that the video had likely originated in America, and referred the alleged crime to the FBI. As a result of the referral, an Oklahoma man, 36, who was working as a dental practice assistant, was arrested by Stillwater (Oklahoma) Police and charged with forcible sodomy. AFP Assistant Commissioner David McLean said the speed with which the information was passed on and actioned by authorities reflected the exceptional working relationship between the AFP and FBI. AC McLean said close cooperation between police worldwide was essential for successfully combating crime and ensuring offenders get their day in court.

AFP members in Port Moresby recently gifted shorts and socks to junior players from the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League as part of the Australian Prime Minister’s XIII annual event. The items were generously donated to the AFP by the South Tuggeranong Knights Minor Rugby League Club and will be enjoyed by more than 500 children in Port Moresby who have registered for next year’s junior rugby league season. AFP members were also invited to a community clinic hosted by the local PNG Rugby League teams. It was a great opportunity for the kids to mingle with AFP members and rugby league players, while participating in games on the field. Initiatives like this highlight the AFP’s support and relationship with our Pacific partners and their communities.

Today AFP members joined the 20th anniversary milestone of the Daniel Morcombe Foundation Inc. Walk for Daniel, raising awareness and reaffirming the AFP’s commitment to child safety. Daniel Morcombe was abducted and murdered while on his way to buy Christmas presents for his family at a local shopping centre in 2003. Since 2004, the Daniel Morcombe Foundation has gathered with the community to walk for Daniel, from Woombye to Palmwoods. The 4 kilometres represent the route Daniel was unable to complete himself. AFP Deputy Commissioner Lesa Gale, Acting Assistant Commissioner Caroline Taylor and members of the AFP-led Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation, joined Daniel’s parents Bruce and Denise Morcombe and more than 2000 supporters for the 20th anniversary walk in honour of Daniel’s memory. Parents, carers and educators are encouraged to regularly talk to children about personal safety. There are a number of resources to help make these conversations easier. To find out more visit www.danielmorcombe.com.au, www.accce.gov.au and www.thinkuknow.org.au
