A Victorian man has been charged after he allegedly engaged in disorderly behaviour and obstructed AFP officers on an aircraft earlier this month. AFP officers at Brisbane Airport arrested the man, 40, after responding to a request for assistance from airline staff. They boarded the Melbourne-bound aircraft and instructed the man to disembark but he allegedly became increasingly aggressive and refused to comply with police directions. AFP officers were allegedly required to restrain the man to remove him from the aircraft. Officers suffered minor injuries as a result. The AFP has zero tolerance for antisocial, violent or dangerous behaviour and will prosecute anyone if they pose a threat to people’s safety.

AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw and Chief of Indonesian National Police General Listyo Sigit Prabowo met today in Semarang for the 12th AFP-INP Senior Officers Meeting, key in helping to keep our region safe. Among the gifts presented was a special painting done by one of the AFP’s own, a First Nations officer, who is renowned for his artwork. The painting shows the archipelago of Indonesia and the continent of Australia. The meeting places represent the States and Territories of Australia and the main Islands and Island groups of Indonesia. The water which surrounds each country is shown and the landscapes of both nations are depicted. Highlights include wattle trees, vast forests, mountains and volcanos. The sitting circle symbolises the partnership between our two countries, highlighting working together as neighbours and friends.

The AFP has expanded its presence in Papua New Guinea with the opening of the PNG-Australia Policing Partnership office in Kokopo. AFP members at the Kokopo office will work with the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) in an advisory role to support the local community, address policing challenges and support ongoing police training initiatives in the region to combat emerging transnational criminal threats. The AFP will continue to expand its presence throughout the country with the opening of an additional office at Mount Hagen next month. The AFP and RPNGC have a long history of working together to ensure safety and prosperity across the region, and the opening of the new offices further solidifies the strong relationship.

The AFP-led National Missing Persons Coordination Centre recently visited the ACT Canine Team to learn about the unique capabilities that AFP canines and handlers use when searching for a missing person. Canines are just one of the many capabilities police can deploy in the search and rescue of a missing person. The AFP has five general purpose dogs that are deployed nationally and internationally to help bring loved ones home and support state and territory partners.

A Shepparton woman has been sentenced to three years imprisonment for orchestrating the forced marriage of her 20-year-old daughter, who later became the victim of a homicide in Western Australia. This sentence marks the first successful conviction and sentencing for forced marriage in Australian history. The investigation began in 2019 when specialist AFP Human Trafficking Team detectives met with the victim, who alleged members of her family were threatening and coercing her into participating in a forced marriage. She was offered police intervention, protection, and emergency safety planning. The court found the 20-year-old woman was eventually coerced into marrying a West Australian man in August 2019, after which she travelled to Western Australia to live with her new husband. In 2020, the WA Police Force Homicide Squad confirmed the death of the victim and subsequently charged her husband with murder. In late 2020, the AFP executed search warrants in relation to the forced marriage. The AFP subsequently charged the victim’s mother with orchestrating the forced marriage.
