The first seven Royal Australian Navy enlisted sailors have graduated from the United States Navy Nuclear Power School in a significant milestone for the AUKUS partnership. These graduates represent the first Australian enlisted sailor cohort to graduate through the United States system, graduating alongside a third cadre of Royal Australian Navy officers. This pioneering cohort will join US SSN crews to gain the practical experience needed to be among the first sailors to operate Australia’s future conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines. This is a significant milestone in developing the skilled workforce to operate Australia’s future nuclear-powered submarine capability. 📰 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eibFGJud

Fair winds and following seas! 👋 The USS Hawaii (SSN 776), a Virginia class nuclear-powered submarine, departed HMAS Stirling after spending over 2 weeks in Australia for the Submarine Tendered Maintenance Period (STMP). During the STMP, Royal Australian Navy personnel have been directly participating alongside US Navy in the maintenance work on the USS Hawaii – This is the first time Australian personnel have participated in the maintenance of a nuclear-powered submarine in Australia. This collaborative effort under the AUKUS partnership marks an important milestone towards establishing a sovereign conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarine capability for Australia. 📰 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e34ZS9xf

The Australian Government announced a new Jobs for Subs program for 200 young workers. These roles, predominantly in Western Australia, span fabrication and machining, engineering and project management, and supply chain and operations qualifications. These high priority disciplines and trades are essential to the nuclear-powered submarine enterprise, building the workforce in the west to sustain and maintain Australia’s future nuclear-powered submarines. Across Australia, the nuclear-powered submarine program is expected to create around 20,000 highly skilled jobs for Australians for decades to come, including supporting around 3,000 jobs in the west alone. 📰 Read More: https://lnkd.in/exegQ8yT

The Submarine Tendered Maintenance Period (STMP) marks a major milestone in the AUKUS Optimal Pathway to deliver conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines (SSNs) to Australia. It is an essential and historic step towards preparing Australia being sovereign ready to own, operate and maintain its future nuclear-powered submarine fleet. The STMP is the first time Australian personnel will actively participate in the maintenance of a US nuclear-powered submarine in Australia. Over the last year, Australian RAN and industry personnel have undergone training provided by the US and the UK to understand how to safely operate and maintain Australia’s future conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarine capability, to be delivered under AUKUS. The STMP is also an opportunity for our AUKUS nations to improve interoperability and contribute to security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. This activity will highlight unprecedented capability building and coordination between like-minded partners who have stood shoulder to shoulder for decades, with deep military ties and a vision for a safe and prosperous future for all. USS Hawaii (SSN 776) has arrived at HMAS Stirling! Personnel from the Royal Australian Navy will commence maintenance work with their counterparts from US Navy on USS Hawaii which has arrived at HMAS Stirling. This SSN is joined by US Submarine Tender, USS Emory S. Land (AS 39), which has equipment and crew dedicated to providing significant maintenance work on US submarines. This is the first time Australian personnel will directly participate in the maintenance of a nuclear-powered submarine in Australia. This visit by a Virginia class submarine and future UK SSNs are critical for building Australian capability in the lead up to Submarine Rotational Force – West (SRF-West) commencing in 2027.

What is Nuclear Stewardship? Australia uses the phrase ‘nuclear stewardship’ to describe the responsible planning, operation, application and management of nuclear and radiological material, technology, and facilities. During the Submarine Tendered Maintenance Period simulated radiological training demonstrations will help Australia increase its knowledge and develop safety practices that protect the workforce, the public and the environment. No radiological material will be transferred ashore in this maintenance period. Australia is unwavering in its commitment to safely and securely steward its nuclear-powered submarines, through their entire life cycles. We are drawing on the UK and US’ decades of experience and world-leading expertise in delivering, operating and maintaining nuclear-powered submarines. Safety, security and safeguards, are the highest priorities of Australia and our AUKUS partners.
